Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

There are four volunteer opportunities available under this duties description. They are:
  • a Boys Courts Director,
  • a Boys Courts Director’s Assistant,
  • a Girls Courts Director,
  • a Girls Courts Director’s Assistant.
The following is a list of the duties associated with being a Courts Director and Court’s Director’s Assistant.
  1. Inform players of the match scoring rules. Ad-Scoring. 2 full sets and if necessary a 10 point tiebreaker for the third set/match tiebreaker. Use a 7 point tiebreaker for a set tiebreaker.
  2. Remind players of proper tennis etiquette and the player oath.
  3. Inform players to contact the courts official if they are unable to resolve a dispute on the court themselves. Ask them to notify a GRTA volunteer wearing a gray GRTA shirt, to get the court official in these instances.
  4. Provide two new balls with the players playing a match.
  5. Remind the players that they only get a 10 minute warmup and no more to keep the tournament on schedule.
  6. Tell players that IMMEDIATELY upon the conclusion of their match, all the players involved in that match, need to come to the Courts Director to report their match scores/results and evaluate their sportsmanship performance as well as their opponents’.
  7. Remind players to keep score of the games on the flip score keepers located on each court.
  8. Direct players to the court they are to play their matches on and to have fun.
  9. Collect Player’s self-evaluations for their Sportsmanship Performance.
  10. Be observant and if you notice a player displaying excellent sportsmanship qualities, please consider nominating them for a USTA Sportsmanship Award.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Prior experience in being a Courts Director is recommended. Must understand the game of tennis, tennis etiquette, be familiar with the USTA Friend at Court 2018book and have a general understanding of how a tennis tournament is run.

Preferred Skills

Must be able to effectively communicate with players and parents. Must be organized, and legibly record match results on the draw bracket boards. Must be able to resolve minor tennis rule disputes and faults if a Roving Umpire Official or Court Monitor is not available/hired to do this task.
