A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS IN DARLINGTON COUNTY IN 2005 AND WISH THEM GREAT SUCCESS IN ALL THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics is a public, residential high school operated under the direction of a board of trustees, which offers academically advanced juniors and seniors across the State of South Carolina the opportunity to explore their interests, discover their world, and grow socially as well as academically; and
Whereas, this prestigious institution’s elite students in 2005 produced the highest SAT average in the State with an average score of 1397 and produced ten National Merit Finalists and three National Achievement Finalists; and
Whereas, all sixty-two members of the graduating class were eligible for the Life Scholarship, and forty-eight of the seniors were Palmetto Fellows; and
Whereas, one exquisite student was a National Finalist in the 2005 U.S. Presidential Scholar Program, and another bright intellect just received notification that she is a candidate for the 2006 Presidential Scholar award; and
Whereas, the student body was recognized for excellence on their Advanced Placement Exams with ten students being named as Scholars, three as Scholars with Honors, six as Scholars with Distinction, and two as National Scholars; and
Whereas, students of the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics have cumulated other national awards including: 2005 Robert C. Byrd National Scholarship recipient, national winner in the 2005 General Electric STAR Scholarship competition, national semifinalist in the thirty-sixth International Physics Olympiad, regional finalist in the Siemens Westinghouse Science Competition, two regional finalists and one national semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search Competition, and an overall finalist at the 2004 Intel International Science Fair; and
Whereas, the school’s math team ranked first in the state math competition and fourth in the national competition. This was the fifth consecutive year the school’s math team placed among the top ten high schools in the national competition; and
Whereas, the students of the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics fulfilled their civic duties by performing more than 11,340 hours of community service in the past year; and
Whereas, the sixty-two members of the Class of 2005 were rewarded for their academic achievements by receiving more than 9.8 million dollars in scholarship monies, adding up to the grand total of 95 million dollars in scholarship monies received by the school’s 984 graduates since 1990; and
Whereas, the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics continues to educate some of South Carolina’s most academically advanced students, instilling in them the fundamentals needed to help lead and better serve our community in the future; and
Whereas, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives recognizes such exceptional students, distinguished faculty, staff, and administration, and an extraordinary academic program. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the remarkable achievements of the students, faulty, and administration of the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics in Darlington County in 2005 and wish them every success in all their future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided the Board of Trustees for the Governor’s School of Science and Mathematics.
