Project Committee Reports—M. Lynn Schmid

Advocates(Kathleen Doenier, Michele Thur) Michele reports that their very small crew of dedicated gardeners maintained the many beds of the Advocates site this summer. A small amount of produce was harvested, but the small veggie garden suffered from cool temps and marauding bunnies! Zinnias also did not fare as well as expected. However, the perennial flowers bloomed beautifully. Gardeners spent much of the summer unearthing small plants lost in a sea of blooms, and re-planting to give all flowers their chance to shine. Gardeners tried to tame the tide of tansy threatening the new plantings on the hillside. The new elderberry shrubs and cherry tree are doing well. Some also tended our evergreen shrub beds that took a hit last winter.

All About Herbs (Kathleen Awe, Annie McNitt) The committee hasn’t met yet to plan for 2015, but will provide dates, once finalized, to OMGs.

Kü̊hefuss House (Susie Granzow),▪8 varieties of hellebores and some Dre's Dagger ferns planted on the north side of the house are doing well. ▪Kitchen garden is looking good (except for the yellow nasturtiums, bloody dock, lettuce, and spinach that the chipmunk favors) ▪Plant markers have been placed in the kitchen garden -- they show the common name, botanical name, and a 2-line description of each plant's uses ▪The fight to keep the clematis on the arbor in check is a never ending battle ▪5 scraggly bushes (unknown genus?) have been removed from behind garage -- this will make room for the compost bin plus three different bushes that will be happy there ▪The west border was cleaned up with three new hostas added.▪We had a great time touring the property as the first stop on our summer picnic/crawl.

Lasata (Judy O’Connell) Lasata was one of the featured committees at the beginning of this month’s meeting, and Judy told us about their work and shared pictures.

Ozaukee County Fair (Cindy Behlen, Jim Layton) OMGs were showcased at the Ozaukee County Fair this yearafter a two year absence. The theme of the five-day exhibit was 'Ask a Master Gardener,'with photos and descriptions of the many Master Gardener projects around the county, and 38 different OMG volunteers working the booth. Two different door prize contests were offered: a large basket full of gardening accessories and fall Master Gardener class tuition. The 'Are you smarter than a Master Gardener' quiz was also popular.More than 200 county residents and two very happy door prize winners gained insight and awareness of what the Ozaukee County extension and its Master Gardener program contributes to the communities of the county. (67 entries for class tuition and 170 forthe gardening basket.) We were under budget with the help of Bill Greymont and Jeanne Mueller. Jeanne generously donated the materials and made the posters and displays. (NOTE: The committee feels a new booth is needed next year; if anyone knows of a company that would like to donateone, they should contact Dan for tax write-off information.)

Pioneer Village(Cathy Cabelka) Pioneer Village was another one of the featured committees at the beginning of this month’s meeting, and Cathy told us about their work.

Tendick (Susie Granzow)Susie Granzow saysBill, who has been doing the mowing at Tendick, had to take a break for a couple months. In the meantime, Lavonne has agreed to do the mowing at Tendick.

Webster Middle School (Stan Suring) Webster team member Jodi Rogahn says the summer went really well, with 25 students in Garden Sprouts Classandfive Green Team members assisting. On the Green Team Work Day, they painted the shed, harvested produce, and weeded. Five students were at the work day. Jodi maintained the garden for the summer with some Green Team help. They did two drop-offs of produce at the food pantry and Green Team members took some produce home. With school starting, Jodi hopesto incorporate the produce into the FCE classes and the Green Team will do classroom tastings.

HeirloomPlant Sale (Melissa Rasmussen), U. S. S. Liberty Memorial Public Library (Grafton) (Carole Stowers and Joan Suelflow) andWashington County Community Gardens (Mary Reilly-Kliss) No reports.
