NOTES FROM LCAE MEETING, SEPTEMBER 19, 2006

The balance of the meeting was used for member announcements and updates as programs get up and running after the summer break.

  1. Nathan Ross – City of London, Social Services (Ontario Works, Manager of Employment Services)

-July 1st signifies new contracts with Purchase of Service (POS) agencies. All interested non-POS agencies are welcome to join meetings

-This year will be looking at educational partners

-Center for LLL will do prior learning assessments for their participants

-Have started addictions team – Glen B – caseload of about 50 – partnered with ThamesValley addictions

-Caseworkers are seeing clients in satellite areas - Glen Cairn and South London

-CLEAR project creating workshops for SS and non SS clients

- Covers from Windsor to Niagara Falls

- Run programs every week working with parenting, personal coping of families of men and women overseas

- Open to topics to create workshops around

- Information available about careers in Military

- Support our troops- tee shirts – wearing on Friday- proceeds going to Afghanistan

- Having to leave WestminsterCollege in search of new home

- Degree studies at Western – new calendar including images of adult learners

Including one at City Hall. Excellent public speaking training – professional development

-Many modules offered on resume, workplace success, job search strategies, business culture, connecting with employers

- Focus programs on career development and career exploration

- GED prep program and pretest

- They research concerns and make recommendations to gov’t levels

- “Take Back the Night” march - will meet at the PeaceGardens – party afterwards

- Productive summer - Funding for literacy materials at early stages of learning – have produced 60 books

- In process of Fall enrolment – group classes have started

- Looking for volunteers in class setting

- November 4th – annual bazaar Pottery – baking at Wonderland Road facility

- Offer many programs – emphasis on offering support of other agency programs

- Provide tours of building and job search materials

- Have identified certain types of literacy issues dealing with employment. Job Connect is now involved. Focussed on practical applications in life for adult learners. i.e., Technological literacy, multicultural literacy etc.

-Gateway to Learning – new marketing concept in literacy brochures

- Dr. Susan Roger, Faculty of Ed at UWO has received a 3 year grant to study women from violence and link to learning and success. Bridges program, a partnership with Gateway to Learningoffers support for women trying to re-enter education.
