Directions: Complete each of the assessments listed below.
1. Perform a close reading of the memoir. While you read, annotate by underlining or highlighting
favorite passages, passages that you believe are important, passages that raise questions, etc. Make notes in the margins about themes or main ideas that the author conveys. If you do not buy the memoir, but check it out of the library, you must turn in a list of 12 to 15 quotes (in MLA citation format) accompanied by your thoughts and connections to the passages you’ve selected. You need to bring your annotated text to class on the first day of the semester.
2. Your teacher will give a test on this selection during the first unit of the semester so it is imperative that your annotations be thorough.
3. Using the list of vocabulary words provided at the end of these instructions, find each vocabulary word on the page indicated. Copy the sentence in which the word appears as well as the sentence that precedes and follows that sentence for a total of three sentences. Highlight the vocabulary word and then underline words and phrases in any of the three sentences that are context clues that help you determine the word’s meaning.
