The “treadmill of production” has arguably been the most visible and venerable concept of the first three decades of environmental sociology. The treadmill of production was the first ambitious macrosociological theory within American (and international) environmental sociology, and nearly 30 years later this theory continues to be one of the anchors of the subdiscipline. This symposium aims to take stock of the development of North American and global environmental sociology through the lens of retrospective and prospective views on the concept of treadmill of production.
The University of Wisconsin organizing committee for the Symposium on Environment and the Treadmill of Production consists of Damayanti Banerjee, Michael Bell, Brad Brewster, Stephen Bunker, Frederick Buttel, Aya Hirata, and Christine Overdevest.
The Symposium Organizing Committee would like to acknowledge the assistance of Nancy Carlisle, Kari Straus, and Mischelle Manz.
The symposium was made possible through funds from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Graduate School.
