Get FIT program:

I volunteered for the Get FIT program my second semester of my sophomore year at Rowan University. The program runs for ten weeks and you can sign up for hour sessions at various times during the week. As a volunteer you help to train those with disabilities in the gym for the hours that you have signed up for. I had one session per week and found the experience to be not only rewarding but challenging as well. This is one program that really did make me feel as if I was making a difference to someone. Obvious enough it was challenging but I found that more than anything this was from the difficulty of learning how to change your teaching style for each client to find what works best for them. These volunteer hours go towards development hours that are earned in order to complete your degree. Drs. Leslie Spencer and Laurie DiRosa are in charge of running the program and are responsible for helping it to continue in growth over the years. Get FIT is unlike any other program that I have had the pleasure of being apart of.

Blood Pressure Certification:

Tom Pote who taught myself and others prepared us for the written test by the end of the eight hours. The results of the test yielded whether or not we would be able to become certified. I not only was lectured about how this process is done correctly but I also had to find other students or staff members who would let me practice taking their blood pressure in the students center. It was a memorable experience and was my first certification.

CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification:

This took place right on Rowan’s campus in the pool located in the Rec Center. It was two consecutive weekends of about eight hours per day. It began with an in pool pretest and ended with a final test in the pool, as well as, a written exam.

National Wellness Institute:

Guest speakers attended with me weekly and discussed topics health and fitness related, as well as, graduate school programs. Attending these meetings have helped to provide me with more of a background in health and exercise science.

Bachelors Degree:

My greatest accomplishment thus far was obtaining my bachelors degree in the fall of 2016. I am now in graduate school studying public health at Johns Hopkins.
