GIRLS ON THE RUN
SPRING 5K RACE DIRECTOR
ABOUT GIRLS ON THE RUN: Girls on the Run is a life-changing, character development program
for girls in 3rd through 5th grade. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, confident and healthy
using an experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running. A 501(c)3, Girls on the
Run of the Triangle is one of 209 independent councils of Girls on the Run International. Our
program combines training for a 5k (3.1 miles) event with healthy living education. We use
exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls discover the
confidence they need in the critical pre-teen years and beyond.
The GOTR Triangle council was founded in 2000 by Mandy (Beard) Murphy. The program has
grown from serving 36 girls on three teams in the Spring of 2001 to serving almost 800
girls on 57 teams throughout the Triangle this fall, with 28% of our participants supported by
program scholarships. Our Spring 5k event has grown in scope over the past three years with
expectations to surpass the 2,000 participant mark in the Spring of 2014. The event brings
an additional 700-1,000 spectators and requires the assistance of nearly 200 volunteers. It is the
culminating program experience for our Spring participants and is the most visible way we
communicate our mission and values to the Triangle community. Our priorities for this event is
for the girls and participants to feel special, valued, and safe and for the GOTR brand shine.
