The Baptism of the Lord

PARENTS OF THE BRIDE AND GROOM

As a church musician I have had the privilege of providing the music for hundreds of weddings over the years. During those moments when I am not playing the keyboard or singing, instead of always focusing on the bride and groom, I often turn my attention to their parents. I marvel at the wonderful expressions of love and pride that emanate from those parents as they witness their children’s love blossom before them. This is the sentiment I am reminded of as I listen to today’s Gospel. At the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry—at the moment of his baptism in the Jordan—we glimpse the love emanating from Father to Son. The Father’s voice, coming from the heavens, declares that this one is his beloved son, in whom he is well pleased.

PLEASING IN GOD’S EYES

What is it that made Jesus pleasing to his Father? And what makes us pleasing to God? Perhaps the prophet Isaiah holds the key. The prophecy announced in today’s first reading gives us a glimpse of the kind of person who is found pleasing in God’s eyes. Too often we see these prophecies fulfilled solely in Jesus. As people baptized into Christ Jesus, we, too, can be the fulfillment of these prophecies. In baptism, we are called to be people who establish justice on the earth; we are summoned to be the light for people who are blind to the needs of others; we are charged with being the servants of God. This work is not easy. It demands the strength that comes only from a deep relationship with God. Today is the day to begin anew to grow in our love for God. Let us strive to become those who are the beloved of God, those in whom God is well pleased. This demands growth in intimacy with God, which can be nurtured each day in prayer, as well as each week when we come to Mass to offer God praise and thanksgiving.

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 42:1–4, 6–7; Psalm 29:1–4, 9–10; Acts 10:34–38; Matthew 3:13–17

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
Saint Matthew’s story of the baptism of Jesus is an appropriate scripture reading to reflect on our own baptism. Jesus’ baptism has been understood as a symbol of his death. Baptism is the sacrament by which we die to an old life of sin and enter a new life of grace. We “put on Christ.” To be a good steward of one’s baptism means to accept that one has new life in the risen Lord and is willing to be guided by the life of Jesus. As the new year begins to unfold, reflect on the meaning of your own baptism, and how you might make an even deeper commitment to a new life in Christ Jesus.

Confirmation insight: The anointing with the oil of Chrism along with the laying on of hand and the words “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” is the essential sacramental sign of Confirmation. Through this anointing, we receive a spiritual character and the indelible “mark” or seal of the Holy Spirit. This anointing marks us as belonging completely to Christ. Because of this, we share fully in his mission to preach the Good News in our words and actions. Note to parents and sponsors: If your candidate has not picked a saints name, please do so before the next class.

The Martha Patton Family has moved to Alabama. St. Michael has lost a family of 4 who were very active in Religious Education. Martha was a Catechist, Sarah, David and Audrey were all active in Server Ministry and Youth Choir Ministry. Sarah was also in the Confirmation program. They were here for 6 years which gives us a total of 24 years of church ministry. We are in need of servers and youth choir members. We will have server training on Sunday, January 11 and also youth choir practice in church. Parents, please encourage your children to participate in the church ministries as part of their faith growth. As we start the New Year it is time for each and every one of us to look at ourselves to see how we can better our faith community here at St. Michael.

Question of the Week

Baptism of the Lord

Theme: We must do what God wants, even when we don’t understand it fully.

Step 1: Listen to the Word.

Step 2: Look into Your Life.

Children: What does God want you to do? To forgive? Be generous? To Love?

Youth: As you grow, how do you know what God wants you to do? How do you hear the voice of God saying “you are one of mine, one of my chosen?

Adult: Today’s readings lead to a core question. As you follow God and do what he wants, how do you experience his loving words: “You are my own. My favor is upon you”? Question of the Week is from Our Sunday Visitor at osveurriculm.com. Click on Lifelong Catechesis and then Question of the Week.

“To everything there is a season and a time to every

purpose under heaven a time to be born a time to love a time to heal a time to die and a time of peace.”
