Course Overview

Stagecraft offers students interested in the technical aspects of Theatre Arts to experience hands-on projects and workshops in set design, lighting design, and sound design. This is a terrific opportunity for students with interest in art, technology, construction, electronics, or audio/video production to gain experience, and to become familiar with the tools used in theatrical production.

Course Goals and Objectives

The objective of the stagecraft class will be to use the students’ new skills to technically produce a school play. Stage Craft will familiarize students with theatre design and the functions of equipment in the theatre. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the function of stage equipment, build scenery, and experiment with lighting and sound design.

Text and Materials

Students will need a folder for storing handouts. Construction materials and tools are provided.

Grading

1.  On task participation 60%

a.  Ability to work independently on projects

b.  Ability to find another task when one is finished

c.  Ability to complete projects in a timely manor

2.  Participation in tech support for school play 20%

3.  Displaying a supportive and respectful attitude 20%

Behavioral Expectations

* Absolutely no cell phone or ipod use will be allowed in this class at any time.

*Students will always report to the classroom at the start of class for role taking and project assignments.

*Students will be expected to adhere to strict safety guidelines concerning the use of tools and equipment.

*All students will have to pass a power tool safety test before being allowed to use tools.

*Students will be expected to work in groups, cooperate and follow instructions.

*Students are expected to be independent workers whom we can trust to find and complete an appropriate new task after finishing an old one.

Class Rules

  1. Show respect for all people in the class and the theatre itself.

2.  Listen and follow directions

3.  When instructions are being given, raise your hand to speak.

4.  I always need to know where you are in the theatre and what you are working on.

5.  When you have completed a task, find a new task to work on. If you do not know what to do, ask Jay, Gray, or me.

Consequences for Breaking Rules

3.  Referral to office

Students who choose to act in an unsafe manner are subject to immediate referral and may be removed from the class.
