Table etiquette is a set of guidelines to follow when eating.
When you use good manners you show respect for others.
It is rude for a gentleman to wear a hat while eating.
Elderly people should be the last people to be seated at the table.
You should stand behind your chair until everyone is at the table, & only sit when host/hostess invites all to be seated.
It is rude to help the person next to you be seated, if necessary.
A guest should always follow the hosts’ lead when serving food.
You should wait til all have been served before you start to eat.
Out of respect to the cook, you should take a small portion of everything.
If you really like something it is okay to take more than your share.
Napkins should remain in your lap throughout the meal.
Napkins should be used to blot your mouth & wipe your fingers.
If you have to leave during the meal – take your napkin with you.
When eating soup, spoon it away from you & lift it to your mouth.
It is considered rude in our culture to slurp soup or blow on it to cool.
Crumbling crackers in soup is considered inappropriate table etiquette.
Sip soup from the side of the spoon.
Salads are typically eaten after the entrée is served.
Instead of biting off a roll/bread you should pinch off small pieces to butter&eat.
If a block of butter is offered take a portion & put on your bread & butter plate for your use.
Carrot sticks, celery, corn on the cob. Olives, potato chips, & most sandwiches are considered finger foods.
Chicken & French fries are finger foods only in informal setting.
It is inappropriate to cut up an entire steak before you eat it.
You should lean down towards your food, instead of bringing the food up to your mouth.
You should leave the table if you have a long bout of coughing or need to blow your nose.
Fish bones should be removed by fingers, spoon, or napkin & placed on side of plate – not the table.
If you drop a utensil leave it on the floor & ask for another.
