A Strategy for Energy Savingin DC-electrified Railway System Utilizing Energy Storage Devices

Abstract: It is commonly said that electrified railway is energy-saving transportation. This is because the running resistance of rail vehicle is low and regenerative brake can be applied. Regenerative brake is important characteristic of motors operated as a generator. By applying regenerative brake, the kinetic energy of rail vehicle can be converted to electric energy. However, in DC-electrified railway system, unidirectional substations using diode rectifier are generally utilized in power supply system to trains. Therefore, especially in DC-electrified railway system, regenerative brake is not always available because regenerative power should be consumed by powering train at the same time. If there are not any other powering train, the kinetic energy of the braking vehicle will be lost and this deteriorates energy efficiency of the system. To cope with this technical issue, many kinds of strategies have been developed. One of these strategies is to apply Energy Storage Devices (ESDs) to DC-electrified railway system. This seminar focuses on Wayside Energy Storage System (WESS), in which ESDs are introduced on the ground. Concerning to the WESS, a new control strategy proposed by our research group and comparison between the new and the conventional control strategy are introduced in this seminar.
