(Levels 5-year-old through 10-year-old)

OVERVIEW

(JULY 2014)

The purpose of this overview is to inform the teacher of important information found in the following Course Outcomes and Essential Units. Please READ CAREFULLY the following descriptions and information before proceeding:

Course Outcomes:

  1. Read carefully the Course Outcomes and their contents.
  2. The Course Outcome Statement gives an overview of each Essential Unit and any additional Selective Units required for the duration of the course.
  3. Course Outcome Statement contains essential unit information along with guidelines for helping a teacher to implement essential units.

Essential Units:

  1. Essential Units must be taught.
  2. Each Essential Unit contains Essential Outcomes.
  3. Each Essential Unit may contain Introduced and Practiced/Ongoing Outcomes and/or Skills (skills in 11-13-year-old).

Essential Outcomes:

  1. Essential Outcomes (TSW) found in each unit must be assessed for mastery.

Practiced/Ongoing Outcomes and/or Skills:

  1. These may be skills that students have mastered but need to continue to practice, or skills that students need to continue to develop but are not yet targeted for mastery.
  2. A Student should work on these skills continuously throughout many, if not all the units in each course.
  3. Theses outcomes and/or skills are support to the student’s demonstration of mastery of the Essential Outcomes (TSW’s).

Selective Units:

  1. Selective Units may be used to complete the total number of required units necessary for a QSI Literacy(Reading & Writing) courses if this is an option in the Course Outcomes.
  2. Selective Units offer a teacher flexibility to choose a unit that will align with other subject areas or conduct a more in-depth study of a previous unit.
  3. Selective units may be engaged as needed throughout time of engagement in a course.
  4. Selective Units allow the student to work on course related mastery that strengthens and supports mastery of essential units.

Suggested Materials:

  1. The suggested materials are usually the main componentsof all QSI elementary Literacy courses, OR, the teacher may select other resources to use in conjunction with or instead of the suggested materials that align with the essential outcomes.
  1. Journeys Literacy Common Core, reading and writing, Literacy and Language Usage, Lucy Calkins Units of Study , Write Source and Write Trait kits, series are listed as the primary resources for levels 5 through 10-year-old, however, the older Reading & Language Arts texts and materials maybe available in QSI schools established prior to 2014. Teachers can use the older text as an additional resource if available at their school.
  1. Rigby Literacy series will be available in QSI schools established prior to September 2014 and should be kept at the schools site for additional support material.

Suggested Strategies & Assessment:

  1. Suggested Strategies & Assessments include: methods, techniques, and materials that can be used to guide and help assess mastery of Essential Outcomes.
  2. The teacher is responsible for carefully previewing and selecting assessment materials that align with the Essential Outcomes in each Essential Unit.

Evaluation Rubric:

Rubrics are provided with each unit to help the teacher and student in evaluating the student’s performance. The rubric also gives clear definition as to the ‘A’ and ‘B’ levels of mastery performance. These rubrics are to be used by the teacher to evaluate individual student performance.

Real-Life Application:

Reading and writing are real-life applications that led well to the ongoing development of a student’s literacy. All units contain essential outcomes to reflect the student’s day-to-day development in Literacy (Reading & Writing).

Suggested Activities and/or Technological Links:

Suggested Activities and/or Technological Links have been added to give an additional dimension to teacher resources as related to the QSI Literacy (Reading & Writing) courses. Teachers can use these suggested activities and technological links in presenting key concepts found in Essential Units.
