Third Sunday of Easter
*****************************************
*****************************************
Today, the third Sunday of Easter, Jesus has appeared again to His disciples in the upper room; He is anxious that they believe He is really risen from the dead in body and spirit. He is especially keen that they believe it is His own earthly body that has risen. He shows them His hands and His feet where the marks of His crucifixion remained. He also eats a piece of fish before their eyes to show how human He was. He reminded them that, “a ghost has no flesh and bones as you see I have.” It was very important that Jesus rise in body for many reasons and for His disciples to see for themselves. There would be no resurrection if Jesus' spirit was to rise, we would have no faith and our belief in Salvation and eternal life would be void. Jesus tells us that because He lives we can live too. Through Him we gain our eternal life. The resurrection fulfils the promise by God to His people to send a Messiah. Jesus' promise to His disciples that He would rise on the third day is fulfilled. The Apostles were changed men after the resurrection of Christ from the dead; they gave witness to Him with courage and conviction. We also have St Paul’s miraculous conversion after an encounter with the risen Lord. For us the Risen Lord is present in the Holy Eucharist and by heeding the Holy Scripture and the account of the Resurrection. At Easter time our faith is strengthened and our conversion deepened and we can have the hope of living forever with the Lord.
