The association of Pediatric metabolic syndrome and risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases

Metabolicsyndrome (MetS) is the name for a group of major risk factors in adult as well s in children and adolescents. It increases risk of all-cause mortality, CVD mortality and mortality, and diabetes. The essential components of MetSare abdominal circumferences (or BMI), blood pressure, lipoprotein and glyceride, and glucose level. Identification of the patients who have high risk of MetS may facilitate the implementation of adequate screening program for MetS and avoid serious complications leads to cardiovascular events.
The proposed project aims to investigate prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among obese children using metabolic syndrome criteria and assess the association of childhood MetS and development of type II diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Interpret each obtain value according to reference cutoff specific age, gender, and race.
Study design: This study is a retrospective data obtained from the KUMC HERON system. The proposed study is designed to examine risk factors associated with childhood obesity. A cohort of patients will be compiled and various statistical methods will be used to determine possible risk factors for the development of metabolic diseases.
The inclusion criteria for the cohort: children aged under 19 years old who are obese with greater than 95%ile for their age and gender. In addition to obesity criteria, patients have at least other two criteria; hyperglycemia, elevated triglyceride, decreases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or elevated blood pressure.
Variables: Age, weight, race, gender, and family history. Lab values, and severity and onset of comorbidity will be also examined.
