Frequently asked questions about the Walking School Bus at FES:

  • Who walks with the children? FES teachers and trained adult volunteers.
  • When does the WSB begin and end?It begins on the first day of school and ends on the last day of school. The WSB operates every day that school is in session.
  • What grades are eligible to participate in the WSB?K-3 are eligible.
  • Does my child need to be registered?We allow children to “try out” the WSB without registering, but if the parent intends the child to walk regularly, they should be registered. The WSB is designed to be a healthy transportation option.
  • How is attendance handled for the WSB?Attendance is taken daily. Your child should immediately “check in” at the attendance table as soon as they arrive.
  • Does the WSB walk on rainy days?Yes, we walk on moderately rainy days, but not in severe rain or if there is lightening.
  • Does my child dress differently for the WSB?Your child must be dressed appropriately for the weather. Umbrellas or raincoats are needed for rainy days and coats, gloves, hats are needed for cold days.
  • What is the time frame/location for dropping off my child?Drop off is from 7:05-7:20 am. Children are not to be dropped off before 7:05 am. The WSBbegins to“line-up” by 7:15 and takes off promptly at 7:20am.Cones mark the drop off lane on School Street (behind Fairhope Public Library). Parents walking with their children can park on Magnolia or Bancroft.
  • What does my child do if they arrive early?We do not allow children to be dropped off till 7:05am. Most children play in the grassy field before the WSB leaves at 7:20am.
  • Does my child have to walk every day?No, it is not required to walk every day, but most children prefer to walk daily.
  • Can I walk with my child & bring a younger sibling? Yes, however, the parent will be responsible for the safety of the sibling.
  • What if my child is running late?We request the children to be on time, but sometimes a parent has pulled up on a side street and we have allowed the child to join the WSB. The child must check in with the teacher who is at the end of the line to confirm attendance.
  • How am I kept updated about changes that may occur with the WSB program?Changes will be communicated to registered students via e-mail, text, and Walking School Bus Facebook.
