The Project

Students will choose a topic to research, work on an invention or perform an experiment, and present the results in a writtenreport. The project should be a science or health related topic, and should answer a question. Any science or health related idea or invention may be used. Interactive displays are encouraged so that students can enjoy demonstrating their projects and allowing others to try them.

Requirements

Projects/experimentsand written reports are due themorning(9 am) of the fair for grading.Experiments will onlybedemonstrated once(in class on the student’s due date).Students have 3 minutestodemonstrate and explain their projects.Written reports WILL NOT be read in class. Students should be able to give a brief overview of their project. After 3 minutes, the next student will begin their demonstration.Projects will be demonstrated in a RANDOM order. Times WILL NOT be assigned.

  • Students MUST be able to carry their own project and any supplies needed in 1 trip.If unable to carry all supplies in 1 trip, the project WILL NOT be accepted.The project should be neat and clearly presented. It should be original work, and reflect the creative talents of the student.
  • Adisplay boardor poster can be used to explain the project through pictures, diagrams, and other information chosen by the student. If possible, displays should be interactive to enable others to see and understand the project.
  • A written report(see guidelines below) explaining the project is also required. Students will read their report in class, not on stage at the fair. They should be able to read their own report without any help.
  • A brief description of the project should be prepared to share at the Science Fair, at night on stage.

Guidelines

  • Students are responsible for setting up and taking down their display. Set up is themorning of the fair.Students are responsible for bringing in paper towels and table cloths to cover the work area.All projects will be brought home at the end of the dayor they will be thrown out.
  • Students MUST be able to carry their projects and supplies needed in 1 trip.
  • Students are to work individually.
  • Grading: Projects will be graded on creativeness, neatness, and the written report.
  • Projects will count as 1 major Science grade
  • Reports will count as 1 major Science grade and 1 major Writing grade

Safety Guidelines

  • Students must be able to carry all materials by themselves in 1 trip.
  • Projects should not have an open flame or use combustible materials.
  • No live vertebrate animals may be brought to the science fair.
  • Bring towels and a table cloth to keep the area clean.
  • No glass containers or bottles may be used.

Written Report Guidelines (your written report should include)

  • The name of the experiment.
  • Materials used.
  • The steps taken to complete the experiment.
  • The outcome of the experiment.
  • What was learned.
  • Students should be able to read their own report without any assistance.

Presenting on Stage Guidelines (your summary should include)

  • Your name and teacher’s name.
  • The name of the experiment.
  • What you wanted to learn.
  • Explain the steps you took to create your experiment.
  • Demonstrate the experiment.
  • Summarize what you learned.
  • Conclusion (thank you)

There are many, many websites devoted to science. Feel free to search the web (with supervision) and have fun! Don’t forget to check your Science text book for ideas.
