Goal setting
Why some people become rich and some merely make a living
Is it because of knowledge or because of being busy. Every body is busy and busy
Father and Son wanted to give 500/- why it is so, because one hour I will be with you.
Goal
Gurukul exercise – glass jar and rocks
Goal post is missing how come we play the game of basket ball.
Cater pillars roamed and roamed and died of hunger.
Sunday schedule very very free – but Monday very very busy. For some people the whole life is a Sunday.
People without goals end up working for people with goals.
We are here as a accident and die as accident
Pan shop fellow – where does the road go – I said, I don,t know, car stopped
Then take any road it would take you there
Lizard, street dog ,
Wg cdr Sharma dog example – what would you do even if you catch one vehicle.
How do you know, you wasted time, because whatever you wanted to achieve, you could not achieve them.
Goals , difference between activities and accomplishment
Tasks are different.
100 Rs notes fell down on the way from bank.
What is a goal, any thing that forwards my life.
Stretch, sense of direction and purpose, out of reach but not out of sight.
Example of person falling down, daughter eloped.
Morning happens, evening happens but goals do not happen.
Many want to become rich,
To spend you must have
To have you must save
To save you must get
To get you must sweat
To sweat you must work
To work you must plan
To plan you must have a goal.
We all spend so much time to plan for a picnic or a party but not our life – planning a vacation that planning for life.
We don’t get inside a bus without a number plate, train without the name, and the aeroplane does have a number. But why people go through life, without knowing where they are
Would you achieve whatever you dream – yes, but unless you dream how can you achieve any thing at all.
Dreams –when you give direction, plan and action they become
Goals helps to bridge gap between what you are and what you can be.
Surgeon – engineer order out of chaos, planning engineer
Politician – who created the chaos.
3% people from Harvard university had goals – 20 years later only they became rich.
Bill Clinton – president’ house breakfast meeting, he told John F Kennedy, I want to become a person like you and the president.
Focus – magnifying glass – discipline – what you are
Arjun eye of the bird
Arise , and awaken stop not, till the goal is reached. Swami Vivekananda
The secret of religion lies not in theories but in practice. To be good and to do the good – that is the whole of religion.
Fix up your own goals :
5.Many people discover that the main reason for waste of time is lack of important goals.
Goals reflect our purpose in life and have widespread impact on our lives. If you do not stand for
something, you will fall for anything.
Goals have the following criteria :
(a)Personal
(b)Practical
(c)Positive
(d)Time bound
(e)Flexible
(f)Measurable
For fixing a worth-while goal, the following list may help you immensely.
GOAL CLUES
(a) New home(o) Increase earnings
(b Home Improvements(p) New position
(c) Lose weight(q) Family activity
(d) Professional skill(r) Become more patient
(e) Long vacation(s) Additional education
(f) Spiritual goals(t) Short vacation
(g) New hobby(u) Increase savings
(h) Closer friends(v) Pay debts off
(j) Co-worker communication(w) Manage something better
(k) Start exercising(x) Stop smoking
(l) Family communication(y) New honour
(m) Solve a problem(z) More spontaneity
(n) Play with children(aa) More marital satisfaction
Now do the following four exercises for 2 minutes each
(a)Write down all the goals that you would like to accomplish in the next 5 years
(Use your imagination)
(b)List all goals you hope to accomplish next year.
(c)List all goals you want to accomplish in the next 6 months.
(d)Write all goals for the next one month.
Now run through all the four lists and give priorities using A,B,C format :
(a) The items you rank as being most essential and desired.
They are your “Must do” things.
(b) The items that could be put off for a while, but still important.
They are “Desirable to do”.
(c) The items that could be put off indefinitely with little or no harm.
They are your “Can wait’s”.
Pick up 2 “A”s from each of your lists to form “A” priority goals. Now that you have formed current major life goals indicating time against each goal, set aside time everyday to work on your “A” priority items. Remember that planning today means a more relaxed tomorrow. An ounce of planning is worth a pound of work. One hour spent on effective planning saves 3-4 hours in execution. Most of us suffer from guilt feeling over the way we spend our time in an unproductive way. Finally the guilt itself may come in the way of productive work. Guard against the vicious cycle. Allocate your time according to your priorities to help you keep focused on important goals. Maintain “To-do” lists and “Not to-do” lists e.g. telephone calls, handling the visitors. Learn to say “No” for things on low priority items or work unfairly heaped on you.
VISUALIZATION
30.Visualization is the process of creating and seeing a mental picture of the kind of thing you want to have or do, or the kind of person you want to be. Visualization goes hand in hand with auto-suggestion. Auto-suggestion without visualization is mechanical repetition and will be ineffective. In order to see results, auto-suggestion must be accompanied by feelings and emotions (visualization).
31.The big question is : Is 21 days of conscious effort a heavy price to pay to change a lifetime for the better ? It all sounds simple but it is not easy. I am not surprised to see how few people go through this routine.
Why are Goals Important ?
On the best sunny day, the most powerful magnifying glass will not light paper if you keep moving the glass. But if you focus and hold it, the paper will light up. That is the power of concentration.
DREAMS
People confuse goals with dreams and wishes. Dreams and wishes are nothing more than desires. Desires are weak. Desires become strong when they are supported by
- Direction
- Dedication
- Determination
- Discipline
- Deadlines
That is what differentiates a desire from a goal. Goals are dreams with a deadline and an action plan. Goals can be worthy or unworthy. It is passion, not wishing, that turns dreams into reality.
Steps to turn a dream into reality :
- Have a definite, clear written goal.
- Have a plan to accomplish it.
- Read the first two twice a day.
Why Don’t More People Set Goals ?
There are many reasons, including :
- A pessimistic attitude – Always seeing the pitfalls rather than the possibilities.
- Fear of failure – What if I don’t set goals and if they don’t make it, then they haven’t failed. But they are failures to begin with.
- A lack of ambition – This is a result of our value system and lack of desire to live a fulfilled life. Our limited thinking prevents us from progress. There was a fisherman who, every time he caught a big fish, would throw it back into the river, keeping only the smaller ones. A man watching this unusual behavior asked the fisherman why he was doing this. The fisherman replied, “Because I have a small frying pan”. Most people never make it in life because they are carrying a small frying pan. That is limited thinking.
- A fear of rejection – If I don’t make it, what will other people say ?
- Procrastination – “Someday, I will set my goals”. This ties in with a lack of ambition.
- Low self-esteem – Because a person is not internally driven and has no inspiration.
- Ignorance of the importance of goals – Nobody taught them and they never learnt the importance of goal-setting.
- A lack of knowledge about goal-setting – People don’t know the mechanics of setting goals. They need a step-by-stem guide so that they can follow a system.

The first step for any successful living is to have specific goals to be achieved within a stipulated period of time. Goals can be internal and external. Internal Goals are set to improve one’s Personality and Character. External Goals relate to achievement of something concrete in life. Achievements are what you contribute to the Society and Prosperity is what society offers you for your achievement. Goals must be pin pointed and specific. You must have burning desire to achieve something great and outstanding in life. A very great achievement is nothing but a series of small accomplishments
