CEP Lesson: Value of the Month – Sense of Shame (Earth Hour)

Lesson Objective: Students willbe able to

  • Know the meaning of Sense of Shame.
  • Be aware of important environmental issues
  • Be aware of our excessive consumptions and the immense negative impact to the environment
  • Reflect how one’s actions can impact the environment.
  • Be aware of what can be done (individually / as a community) to conserve the environment

Lesson Plan:

Duration / Activity / Resources
5 mins / Know the meaning of Sense of Shame.
  1. Explain to class the definition of Sense of Shame (one of the school’s 8 core values).

2 mins / Beauty of our Forests
  1. Play the video Beauty of our Forests to the class.
  2. Get them to listen to the sounds and pay attention to the images seen.
  3. Engage them to imagine they are in the forest and impress upon them that forests on earth have been a rich source of natural resources in many ways to them.

10 mins / Our actions caused Climate Change
  1. Impress upon students that the actions they do every day will cause climate change and result in depletion of natural resources.
  2. Define climate change with students. Read Slide 5 and 6.
  3. Remind students that their common practice like switching on the fans and air conditioners at the same time will increase the consumption of electricity and this will cause a rise in burning of fossil fuel. This will increase the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and cause the temperature in the atmosphere to increase. Read Slide 7.
  4. Other practices like farming, burning of vegetation and dumping of rubbish will also result in the release of methane gas, another greenhouse gas and together, this will result in Enhanced Greenhouse Effect. Read Slide 8.

  1. Play the video on Climate Change and Singapore.
  2. Engage students to understand how climate change has caused average Singapore temperature to rise and flash floods to occur due to erratic rain falls.

  1. Explain to students the purpose of Earth Hour. Read Slide 10.
  2. Play the video to explain what Earth Hour is all about and how it reminds all to act together to reduce climate change.

10 mins / Eco Pledge Sheet
  1. Engage students to reflect on their actions towards the environment and how they would want to commit to be more eco-friendly in their actions towards the environment.
