GRADE 2 LANGUAGE ARTS LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the second quarter, second grade students should be able to:

Foundational Skills

1. Phonics

●  Recognize and identify consonants, vowels, digraphs, blends, glued sounds, vowel-consonant-e and open syllables, and r-controlled vowels

●  Read one and two syllable words with prefixes and suffixes

2. Word Recognition

●  Read Wilson Fundations trick words in context

●  Recognize and define vocabulary words

●  Identify synonyms and antonyms

3. Fluency

●  Read grade level text with appropriate speed, accuracy, and expression

Text Comprehension

1. Demonstrate an understanding of informational text

●  Explain how specific images and text features contribute to understanding a text

●  Ask and answer questions such as who, what, when, where, why, and how

●  Determine the meaning of words and phrases including multiple meaning words

●  Comprehend nonfiction stories independently

2. Demonstrate an understanding of literature

●  Use information from illustrations and words in print to demonstrate understanding

●  Describe how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song

●  Ask and answer questions such as who, what, when, where, why, and how

●  Determine the meaning of words and phrases including multiple meaning words

●  Comprehend fictional stories independently

Composition

1. Write clear and focused text

●  Handwriting is legible and age appropriate

●  Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events

○  Write by grouping information and provide a clear beginning, middle and conclusion

2. Demonstrate appropriate use of English grammar

●  Demonstrate rules of writing (capitalization and end punctuation)

●  Identify and write contractions

●  Identify abstract and regular/irregular plural nouns

●  Write, read, and interpret dialogue

3. Use conventional spelling for words with common and uncommon patterns

●  Use conventional spelling for trick words with uncommon patterns
