Leon B. Pennington Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship is designed to assist high school seniorsor currently enrolled college students who wish to pursue higher educationand continue their education. The scholarship is valued at $500. The recipient of the Leon B. Pennington Memorial Scholarship is automatically a candidate for the National Association of Educational Office Professionals (NAEOP) Marion T. Wood Scholarship which is valued at $500.

Candidates may be sponsored only by a member of the Maryland Association of Educational Office Professionals (MAEOP). The dues of the sponsoring MAEOP member must be paid for the current year.

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  1. The applicant must be a graduating high school senior in the Baltimore County Public Schools system.
  1. The applicant shall expect to enroll or be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited institution of higher education (two- or four-year college, university, business college/school, or vocational/technical education).
  1. The applicant must havea current GPA of at least 2.8 (of a possible 4.0).
  1. The applicant shall be responsible for the completion and return of all support materials. (See application section.)

APPLICATION

An application will be considered complete when the following items have been received by MAEOP:

  1. Application for scholarship on the appropriate form provided by MAEOP and marked Leon B. Pennington Memorial Scholarship. (Failure to use correct form will result in disqualification.)
  1. Biographical information form. (All items must be complete. Failure to complete the form in its entirety will result in disqualification.)
  1. High school or college transcript with indication of current GPA. (The transcript shall be an official document and marked as such.)
  1. Documentation of any additional course work completed.
  1. One page essay (Form IV).
  1. Three (3) letters of recommendation from non-family and non-MAEOP members. Letters may be from school officials, teachers, former or present employees, or others in a capacity to describe the student’s activities and leadership record, character, personality, initiative, drive, community involvement, and/or other factors supporting his/her candidacy. Letterhead stationery is appropriate. All materials shall be typed.

NOTE:Only application forms provided by MAEOP and marked Leon B. Pennington Memorial Scholarship may be used. Application forms and support materials become the property of MAEOP and will not be returned to the applicant or the sponsoring affiliate association/member. Neatness and accuracy will be considered. Regular paper (8 ½ x 11) is required for additional attachments. Failure to submit all requested information in one packet, to follow guidelines, or to attach support materials will result in disqualification. All items must meet the posted deadline. No exceptions will be made.

SELECTION CRITERIA/PROCEDURE

  1. Award is based on academic standing, financial need, and initiative.
  1. Criteria for selection:

Scholarship Record (Form II)...... 40%

Financial Need (Form III)...... 30%

Activities/School/Extra Curricular (Form II)...... 10%

One-Page Essay (Form IV)...... 10%

Recommendations (Form I and attached letters)...... 10%

  1. Award will be determined by a panel of judges.
  1. Sponsoring MAEOP member will receive notification of recipient of the scholarship, and the MAEOP scholarship committee chair will be responsible for notifying the applicant.

AWARD DISBURSEMENT

  1. MAEOP will forward a check in the scholarship amount to the scholarship recipient after receipt of the following:
  2. Acceptance notification from the educational institution in which enrolled; AND
  3. Tuition invoice AND/OR
  4. Receipt for class materials (lab fees, textbooks, required tools, auxiliary materials, etc.)

Note: These items should be forwarded to the MAEOP scholarship committee chair.

  1. The approved scholarship monies will be valid only for the academic year following the awarding of the scholarship (fall, winter, spring, summer, quarter/semester).

If conditions of the Leon B. Pennington Memorial Scholarship are not met, it is understood that MAEOP reserves the right to withdraw the scholarship award.
