Pursuant to art. 5 of Law 91 of 1992, the NON-ITALIAN HUSBAND/WIFE of an Italian citizen wishing to be naturalised Italian may apply, provided he/she has a valid residence permit, through this Consulate General after 3 years from the date of their marriage and only if the Italian spouse is registered as a resident with this Consulate General (email: tel. 020 7823 6519 - only Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3,00 pm to 4,30 pm).

The applicant is required to come to the Consulate in person with the following documents:

• APPLICATION FORM (Annex 1) duly completed and UNSIGNED. Each original document must be produced with 1 photocopy.
• ESTRATTO PER RIASSUNTO DELL’ATTO DIMATRIMONIO which must only beissued by the Italian Comune after the third year of marriage where the marriage was registered (the marriage certificate issued on the day of the marriage ceremony is not acceptable).
• FULL BIRTH CERTIFICATE of the applicant, legalized by Apostille, if the Country signed the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961, if not it must be legalized by the Italian Embassy/Consulate in the country of issue. Thetranslation into Italian, made by a translator, must be certified by the Italian Consulate/Embassy in the country where the certificate was issued (for the Italian Consulates and Embassies visit
• CERTIFICATE OF NO CRIMINALRECORDS from the country of origin and any other countries where the applicant may have resided before moving to the U.K.permanently. They have to be legalised by Apostille, if the Country signed the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961, if not it must be legalized by the Italian Embassy/Consulate in the country of issue.The translation into Italian, made by a translator, must be certified by the Italian Consulate/Embassy in the country where they were issued.

• 1 photocopy of the Italian spouse’s passport (only the pages showing the photograph and signature)

1) The Italian certificate of marriage and the British no criminal records certificate must not have been issued more than 6 months before the date when the application is lodged.

2) The ONLY way you can book an appointment with the citizenship office is by Internet through our website: On the home page click on the bar where is written in red “Automated appointment…”. Create your own account and then you’ll be able to book it. Be aware that you can only book from today until the next 32 weeks EXCEPT WEDNESDAY. Please be informed that Law n.94 dated 15.07.2009, concerning provisions in matters of “public security” which came into force on 08.08.2009, was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale (Official Journal) of 24.07.2009. This law brings about, amongst other things, some changes in the existing citizenship law, with specific reference to the application of naturalisation by virtue of marriage.

In particular, the new legislation determines the following:

• the matrimonial tie must be maintained until the Oath of Allegiance is undertaken;
• a fee of 200 Euros has been introduced, TO BE PAID ONLY IN EUROS, for the acquisition of Italian citizenship by marriage and for the acceptance, reacquisition and renunciation of Italian citizenship.
