UNDERFLOOR RACEWAYS FOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1  CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1.4  SUBMITTALS

1.5  QUALITY ASSURANCE

Specifier Note: In this article, describe qualifications, regulatory requirements, certifications, field samples, mock-ups, and pre-installation meetings.

  1. Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of underfloor duct and system components of the types and sizes required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than 10 years. Provide underfloor ducts and components produced by a manufacturer listed in this section.
  2. Electrical Raceways and Components: Comply with requirements of applicable local codes, NEC, UL, and NEMA Standards pertaining to underfloor raceways and components. Comply with UL884 "Standard for Underfloor Raceways and Fittings." Listed and labeled in accordance with NFPA 70, Article390 and Canadian Underwriters Laboratories (cUL) Standard C22.2, No. 80.

1.6  DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

  1. Deliver underfloor ducts and associated components in factory labeled packages.
  2. Store and handle in strict compliance with manufacturer’s written instructions and recommendations.
  3. Protect from damage due to weather, excessive temperature, and construction operations.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1  ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURER

Specifier Note: Retain either of the options in the following paragraph and delete the other one after editing entire section.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: The design for underfloor ducts and associated components is based on the [Walkerduct Two (2) Inch IPS Round Preset] [Walkerduct Pro Series] Underfloor Duct System manufactured by legrand/Wiremold, 60 Woodlawn Street, West Hartford, CT 06110; toll-free 800-621-0049, telephone 860-233-6251, fax 860-232-2062; Web Site: www.legrand.us/wiremold.
  2. Substitutions will be considered under provisions of Section012500.

2.2  UNDERFLOOR DUCT SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Specifier Note: In the following article, retain only those products that are to be incorporated into the project and delete the others.

  1. Underfloor duct system shall provide full capability to install Category 6, 53 and fiber optic cabling and connections in a flush service fitting. Preset provides maximum cable performance and cable loop storage. Flush service fittings also provide bend radius features at workstation. Factory installed presets permits conduit, partition, and other feeds directly out of preset.

Specifier Note: Retain either of the two options in the following paragraph as required for a specific project. If both size ducts are required retain both options and indicate location of each duct type on the Drawings.

  1. Ducts: [No. 2 duct with outside dimensions of 3-1/8" wide x 1-1/4" deep [79mm x 32mm] with an interior cross sectional area of 3.34 sq in [2155 sq mm].] [No. 4 duct with outside dimensions of 6-1/2" wide x 1-1/2" deep [165mm x 38mm] with an interior cross sectional area of 8.72 sq in [5626 sq mm].] Manufacture duct from one-piece continuous welded 16 gage [1.5mm] galvannealed steel. Continuous weld shall be on the side of the duct so as not to impede drilling for aftersets. Standard length of duct is 10 feet [305cm].

Specifier Note: Retain either of the following two paragraphs depending on which presets are required for a specific project and delete the other one.

  1. Presets: IPS Presets; zinc die-cast components mounted 12 inches [305mm] or 24 inches [610mm] on center of the duct as standard. Other preset spacing shall be available from the manufacturer. Presets shall be a minimum of 7/8-inch [22mm] over the top of the duct. Round inserts shall have an inside diameter of two (2) inches [51mm] IPS capable of housing two (2) inch conduit, a beveled base which is expanded into the duct to form a continuous passageway, and a removable steel cap that is recessed to receive concrete.
  2. Presets: Pro Series Presets provide large access area into duct; zinc die cast components mounted 12 inches [305mm] or 24 inches [610mm] on center of the duct as standard. Other preset spacing shall be available from the manufacturer. Presets shall be a minimum of 1-inch [25mm] over the top of the duct for pedestal style fittings or when cabling is to be pulled through activation point. A minimum 1-1/2 inch [38mm] preset is required to support standard duplex receptacles and communication devices when using flush activations. Seal presets with recessed removable mudcaps to receive concrete. Preset dimensions are 4-1/8" wide x 4-13/16" long [105mm x 123mm]. The preset base is expanded into the duct to form a continuous passageway.
  3. Preset Extensions: Die-cast construction; attaches to presets with push on metal sleeves; factory or field installed; one (1) inch [25mm] size is stackable; 1/2-inch [12.7mm] size cannot be stacked with another extension on top.
  4. Mudcaps: Steel replacement cap for preset; recessed to hold 3/8-inch [9.5mm] of concrete.
  5. Marker Caps: Replaces mudcap on preset to indicate location of last insert in each run. Red or green color as suitable for type of service to be run in duct.
  6. Aftersets: Installed either before or after concrete pour to create activation from duct. Provide 6-1/2" [165mm] core drilled hole in concrete and 2-1/2" [64mm] diameter hole in duct to accept afterset. Grout fill around afterset to fill voids in 6-1/2" [165mm] hole. Attaches to duct with locking tabs. Height can be increased by the use of extensions. Aftersets are gangable and include alignment clips and mudcaps. Aftersets accept all Pro Series activations. A minimum 1-1/2 inch [38mm] afterset is required to support standard duplex receptacles and communication devices when using flush activations. Aftersets shall be a minimum of 1-inch [25mm] over the top of the duct for pedestal style fittings or when cabling is to be pulled through activation point.
  7. Duct Conduit Hub: 12-inch [305mm] section of duct with one (1) inch [25mm] preset for rigid or PVC conduit. Provides feed to isolated outlets; maintains 24-inch [610mm] spacing of presets. One (1) inch [25mm] height. Additional extensions provided if higher preset is required.
  8. Adjustable Duct Supports with Built-In Couplings: Steel construction; provided with leveling screws for adjustment of height. Different leg heights available. Used to support, couple, and hold duct in place before and during concrete pour. Supports can be fastened to form or to slab through holes in feet. Top members maintain one (1) inch [25mm] spacing between ducts. Locate duct supports on approximately five (5) feet [1.5m] intervals.

Specifier Note: Retain one option in the following paragraph and delete the other one. If both duct sizes are used on a project retain both options.

  1. Hold-Down Straps: [Duct strap for No. 2 duct is 1-1/4" [32mm] high.] [Duct strap for No. 4 duct is 1-1/2" [38mm] high.] Straps have a maximum width of 1-1/4" [32mm].

Specifier Note: Retain the bracketed text at the end of the following paragraph if heavy equipment is anticipated to travel across the finished floor in which the junction boxes are installed. If not, delete the bracketed text.

  1. Single Level Junction Boxes: Provided with openings on four (4) sides for duct connections and on four (4) corners for conduit adapters. Completely ground all duct and conduit connections. Junction boxes shall provide for 1-1/4 inch [32mm] bend radius of cables inside box. Provide parts required to extend height of each junction box as required by floor treatments. Junction boxes shall have a square access opening. Access cover plates shall be 1/4-inch [6.4mm] thick. Boxes shall withstand a minimum 300 lb concentrated load as required by UL884. [Heavy-duty junction boxes for applications where heavy equipment will travel across the finished floor. Provide heavy-duty junction boxes with internal supports and 3/8-inch [9.5mm] thick access cover plates.]

Specifier Note: Retain one of the two following paragraphs as required for a specific project. The first paragraph contains activations for the IPS Series of presets and the second paragraph contains activations for the Pro Series of presets.

  1. Activations: Wiremold 525Series, Multiplex Series, or 1200 Series. Supply activations in quantities equal to 15 percent of the supplied presets unless specified otherwise.
  2. Activations: Wiremold 525Series, Multiplex Series, Pro Series, PSRC9 Series or SourceI Series. Supply activations in quantities equal to 15 percent of the supplied presets unless specified otherwise.
  3. Provide other system components including duct closures, adapters, elbows and offsets as required. Elbows shall provide two (2) inches [51mm] minimum bend radius.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1  EXAMINATION

Specifier Note: Delete either of the options in the paragraph below to suit project requirements.

  1. Examine conditions under which boxes and fittings are to be installed and substrate that will support boxes. Notify the [Architect/Engineer] [Construction Manager] in writing of conditions detrimental to proper completion of the work. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2  INSTALLATION

  1. Strictly comply with manufacturer's installation instructions and recommendations and approved shop drawings. Coordinate installation with adjacent work to ensure proper clearances and to prevent electrical hazards. Locate duct in strict accordance with Drawings in order to maintain electrical module spacing. Remove any burrs or sharp edges on material.
  2. Place duct on supports and align presets, attach couplings and duct supports to duct. Securely ground all joints with grounding screws or clips. Adjust duct supports and duct distribution system so the top of the presets are 1/8-inch [3.2mm] to 3/8-inch [9.5mm] below the screed line.
  3. Permanently fasten duct supports to supporting framework. Spacing between supports shall not exceed five (5) feet [152cm]. The raceway supports shall provide for 1-1/4 inch [32mm] adjustment.
  4. Use marker screw caps in place of the standard preset mudcaps in each preset adjacent to a junction box, on each side of a permanent wall, in the final preset of each duct run and on both sides of a change in direction of duct.
  5. Perform a final inspection of the entire duct system prior to concrete placement. Seal any gaps in the system with sealing compound recommended by duct manufacturer or duct tape to prevent mortar or concrete from entering system. Level junction box cover plates flush with finished concrete floor.
  6. After placement of concrete fill and before wiring is installed, remove debris and other foreign matter from duct system. Install service fittings after installation of floor finishes. Cut floor as necessary, following duct manufacturer’s recommendations. If moisture is present, remove cover plates from junction boxes as necessary to allow air circulation. Pull wire and cable from outlet insert toward junction boxes.
  7. Do not use installed duct system as a working platform or walkway.
  8. Concrete topping shall be as indicated on Drawings and as specified in Section033000. Do not use concrete containing chlorides from any source over the top of the duct system. Design reinforced concrete in accordance with ACI318. Concrete placement shall follow proper and accepted industry practice and be in accordance with ACI304.
  9. Vibrate concrete at all headers, junction boxes and duct to insure that the concrete completely fills underneath the duct system. Do not over vibrate the concrete. Shrinkage and temperature reinforcement above the duct system shall be in accordance with ACI318. Take care during concrete placement and, in particular, during concrete vibration to prevent rising of top reinforcement within the slab. Hand finish concrete within a minimum distance of 24 inches [610mm] adjacent to junction box access openings so that the top of finished concrete and junction box access openings are flush with each other.
  10. Mechanical Security: Underfloor duct systems shall be mechanically continuous and connected to all electrical outlets, boxes, device mounting brackets, and cabinets, in accordance with manufacturer’s installation sheets.
  11. Accessories: Provide accessories as required for a complete installation, including insulated bushings and inserts where required by manufacturer.
  12. Unused Openings: Close unused box openings using manufacturer's recommended accessories.

3.3  FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  1. Perform field testing and inspection in accordance with Section014000. The installed duct system shall be UL Listed under Standard 884 and comply with Article390 of the NEC, and be certified by the Canadian Underwriters Laboratories under cUL Standard C22.2, No. 80.

3.4  CLEANING AND PROTECTION

  1. Clean exposed surfaces using non-abrasive materials and methods recommended by manufacturer.
  2. Protect Infloor components from damage until acceptance. Do not permit equipment or heavy traffic over duct during construction without first installing ramps over the duct. Design ramps so that imposed loads are not transferred to the duct. Replace duct system components which are damaged during construction.
