Can you persuade the King to let you build a Cathedral?

Introduction

▪ This activity is designed to test and consolidate knowledge after students have studied Medieval Cathedral building using the Year 7 Materials at .

• In this activity you will try to persuade the King to let you build a cathedral.

• He will ask you ten questions to test your knowledge.

• You will be given a rating at the end.

▪ The game can be found at

EITHER – Approach 1 (individual task)

• Complete the interview using the link above.

• Make sure you give your teacher your score at the end of the interview.

▪ The best individual score will gain a merit.

OR – Approach 2 (whole-class approach task)

• Your teacher will organise the class into three teams.

Rules

▪ Your objective is to persuade the King to let you build the cathedral.

▪ If you get to the end of the game with a rating of less than 50%, you have lost the job.

▪ If you get a score over 50% at the end of the game, the teacher will flip a coin to decide if you won the job or not.

▪ If you get a score over 75%, then the teacher will roll the die. Rolling a “1” or a “2” will be classed as a ‘win’.

▪ If the class ‘wins’ they could get a sweet each as a prize.

Procedure

▪ The King will provide you with the first question. Each team should decide on what they think is the best answer.

▪ The teacher (or a student) will roll a die.

Die Roll = 1-2 > The first team answers the question

Die Roll = 3-4 > The second team answers the question

Die Roll = 5-6 > The third team answers the question

NOTE: After answering, you will be asked ‘how certain’ you are. The rest of the class can offer their ideas at this point. If you declare yourself 100% certain, and you are correct, your rating will be a perfect 100%, but if you are incorrect your rating will fall to 0%. If you are only half-certain (50%) and you are correct you will gain less points, but will also lose less points if you are wrong (and so on).

▪ The King’s face will clearly tell you after your choice whether he was happy or not. Read his reply.

▪ Continue with the interview until all questions are answered or the time available is used up. The teacher will then take your final score and use this to decide if you have won the job of building the Medieval Cathedral!
