VERSIONS OF THIS BILL

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE STUDENTS, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, AND STAFF OF W. J. KEENAN HIGH SCHOOL IN RICHLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE ON RECEIVING THE 2005 PALMETTO’S FINEST AWARD AND STRIVING TO REACH AND MAXIMIZE THE FULL MEASURE OF THEIR TALENTS AND ABILITIES.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were pleased to learn that W. J. Keenan High School of Richland School District One recently received the 2005 Carolina First Palmetto's Finest School Award; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and Greenville-based Carolina First Bank annually recognize two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school that have educators, students, parents, and supporters who are responsible for “ innovative, effective educational programs”; and

Whereas, the judges who recommend Palmetto’s Finest winners take into account objective factors such as test scores and college admission offers but also consider other, sometimes less recognizable, factors such as volunteerism; and

Whereas, each applicant school first completes a seventeen page written statement detailing virtually every aspect of the school’s operation including, for example, staffing, curriculum, programs, resources, and community collaboration; and

Whereas, the applicants are then visited by a team of members from the South Carolina Association of School Administrators’ Palmetto’s Finest Awards Committee; and

Whereas, after the sixteen finalists are selected each school undergoes a second visit from a different team of committee members, after which a selection meeting is held to determine the four winners; and

Whereas, W. J. Keenan was held in high regard based on its meteoric rating improvement on the annual school report card, its partnership with the University of South Carolina in offering engineering classes, and for the exceptional number of students accepted into college; and

Whereas, the dedication of the students, administration, faculty, and staff is further evidenced by the 3.8 million dollars in scholarships awarded among last year’s senior class; and

Whereas, the quality training at W. J. Keenan High School obviously expands the educational horizons of its students in an innovative and effective manner serving as a shining example for schools throughout the State. The members of the General Assembly are proud to honor their effort and success. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby recognize and congratulate the students, faculty, administration, and staff of Keenan Elementary School in Richland School District One on receiving the 2005 Palmetto’s Finest Award and striving to reach and maximize the full measure of their talents and abilities.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to a representative of W. J. Keenan High School on behalf of the students, faculty, administration, and staff.
