Rube Goldberg Machine
Like the famous cartoonist Rube Goldberg, you will design an unusual contraption that performs a simple task.
The purpose of this project is technological design – TRIAL and ERROR. You are to create a problem and come up with solutions to solve it. For example, you may want to create a contraption that will turn the pages of a book or make lemonade. At first, you will not succeed. Try again. Persistent and perseverance are the expectations. If you fail, try something different but don’t give up!
You must create a contraption with 4 causes and effects as part of the design. See below for specifics.
Project specifications for your contraption:
- The contraption should perform one task (page turner)
- It should be stable and can stand on its own.
- It can’t be larger than 2 tables (5’ x 3’) but you may build up (or down!)
- The contraption should be made using items found at home, borrowed from a friend, or classroom supplies. Please do not purchase anything for this project.
- The design should not take longer than 10 minutes to set up.
- A “blueprint” must be drawn to turn in on the day you present your contraption. Indicate the START and FINISH of your contraption. Use arrows to trace the route of movement.
TIPS: Look for easy to handle, durable materials. Check out your closets, toy boxes, garage or junk drawers, but ask your parents first before bringing it to school.
SAFETY: As you build your contraption, keep in mind that safety must be your first concern. Check with your parents before you use power tools, use electricity or lift heavy objects. Check with Mr. Treadway if fire or anything dangerous will be used.
