Carbon Valley Regional Library
Carol Taylor, Cindy Welsh, Crystal Schimpf (notetaker), Erin Kirchoefer, Matthew Duffy, Victoria Boone
College Invest: Matthew
College Invest, a non-profit college planning organization, is looking to offer workshops at HPLD locations. They offer 5 different programs on topics including college planning, financial literacy, and applying for financial aid (including FAFSA). Classes are available in English and Spanish. The organization does “sell” college investment products, but they are sponsored by the state and are a reputable organization.
Matthew is coordinating workshops for Greeley locations, Erie and CVRL should contact him if interested. Carla Castillo is the contact person at College Invest, and her number is 303-376-8831.
Victoria suggested that Matthew also notify the teen librarians.
Cindy said this is similar to services the Dream Team has provided in the past, and suggested that anything that might help people fill out the FAFSA would be very valuable.
What’s Happening at Your Library?: Round Table Discussion
Lincoln Park: Sue
Common Read Programs: Mehndi program for teens, spinning program, bottle cap jewelry art, and pottery display. Pottery is being sold by artists (direct, not through library) and proceeds will go to Pennies for Peace.
No Career programming in November this year, due to scheduling. (Matthew will be having a career presentation in January)
Collaborative program with UNC at end of October (10/24) for Dia de Los Muertos, location still needs to be determined. Program to include sugar skulls, paper flowers, pocket shrines, other adult/teen oriented crafts.
Ongoing issues in collaborating with city for programming space. Unsure who to talk to, willingness on city’s part to provide space may be an issue. Cindy may know who to contact for specific venues, from previous experience.
Erie: Carol
Local History Series: very successful, usually 25-30 adults, partnership with Erie Historical Society. Upcoming programs include a history of local schools, a program about the Sand Creek Massacre site, and a talk about the Boulder Jane Doe case (1954). Cost is generally 50-200, and can’t go to high since space is small.
Farr: Matthew/Erin
Conversations with the Maestro: Lunch & Learns once a month, coinciding with Greeley Philharmonic performances. These will be presentations about the upcoming concert program, talking about composers and specific pieces. Partnership to help promote 100th anniversary of the orchestra.
Financial Strategies Workshop series: Debbie Fryright is presenting these workshops through her nonprofit, Women’s Financial Network. Running September-October
Brandon Seipp, guitarist, will be performing in November on a Friday evening
NaNoWriMo event will be held on 1st Saturday in November, from 7-10 PM (a “write-in” event after library hours). This will fall between two after-hours film events that take place that day.
Cult Movie Night (Peter Derk’s program): ongoing, monthly program, slow to start, but is gaining popularity. Peter shows a cult classic movie, no discussion.
New Library Card Holder Orientation: Farr will pilot this in 2010, and if successful may be offered at other locations. Two events will be planned, Spring and Fall, to invite new cardholders to come learn about the library. Library will feed them breakfast, talk about programs, maybe give a storytime. Erin got the idea from Honda – new Honda owner orientation event.
CP: Victoria
Mexican/Hispanic Heritage Month special program :Khris G. is planning, taking over entire library
Family History Day: Margaret Langley is planning with the genealogical society, taking over entire library and parking lot, September 19
Native American Heritage Month programs: throughout the month of November, including Film Night (Black Rogue), and a big celebration day including dancers, musicians, and a storyteller. Also, a BIG display will be on loan from the Greeley museum about hunting bison, with a big tepee and props.
Matthew suggested contacting the AIMS English Honor Society to possibly get volunteers to help with film discussions, especially for Khris’ page to screen program.
Writer’s workshops in 2010: No. Co. Writer’s Workshop to first program of several.
Adult storytimes are a possibility for the future, working with a Greeley Acting group (The Stampede Troupe?)
Local Festivals (aside): Cindy suggested potato day as a local festival to visit, which is a fundraiser for the Greeley Historical Museum (?). The event ties into the history of the area. Carol shared that Erie has Biscuit day, which also ties in with local history. Erin shared that she would like to do something next April for the edible books festival/day.
Outreach: Cindy W.
Three cups of tea/right to read work going on
Looking to do movie night collaboration for Somali population, but would like to get feedback from the community. Would like the movie to start some conversation with the community. Crystal suggested “Women make Movies” as an option for documentaries with public performance rights, and Victoria suggested “Point of View”
Literacy volunteers are needed for GED assistance, maybe something to think about for International Literacy Day in September (9/8?) of 2010.
CVRL: Crystal
Writers group: had first meeting and was very successful, about 15 people. Format is different topic each meeting, plus a time to share ideas and writing. Wiki may be problematic, as some members are unwilling to post material online (justifiably worried about copyright).
Harvest Festival in November: One afternoon to include Native American dancers, a local author (Dan Blegen), and activities/crafts/games. Saturday, 11/7, 1-3 PM
Film night is becoming family movie night, since that is mostly who comes. Still trying to pick movies that have something noteworthy.Trying “Academy Award Afternoons” in January/February to prepare for 2010 academy awards. These will be “unstaffed” programs, where the movie plays during regular business hours.
Other business items:
Voices of the Americas: Sue
This is the collaboration theme with UNC for 2010, start thinking of ideas. Victoria, Cindy, and Erin will all be going to the planning meeting on 9/22,
Arts Alliance
This organization promotes arts in Greeley, and will be meeting on 9/19 to brainstorm ideas for future planning to promote arts.
South Weld Community Outreach: Crystal
Weld County is looking to increase service in South County. I am on two task forces that are working on this as well (one put together by the county, one by the St. Vrain Valley School District). I have been gathering information about local assistance resources, and would be happy to share them.
Meeting Schedule
Second Thursdays are working, 9-11 AM, so we will continue with that for now (UPDATE: Linda from Ft.Lupton asked if we could change to first or third week at same day/time. A decision had not been reached by the group prior to the typing of this document, October meeting will stay as scheduled).
Crystal suggested that we have the members on a quarterly meeting schedule, and to have that meeting focus more on brainstorming/sharing and less on business). Victoria will contact our current member library participants and see what they think of that idea. Victoria will also contact Rita to see if we can invite more member libraries to participate.
Next meeting will be Thursday, October 8, 9-11 AM at Farr
Winter Reading Program
Everyone agreed that last year’s format worked well, but that we would make small adjustments to incorporate new ideas and fix small issues. We will get a plan together by the October meeting to send to PIO, and will run by Barb for approval.
We will try to work out most of the details via email between now and then. All ideas, suggestions, etc. should be sent to Crystal. She will compile a list and will send back to the group for discussion and “voting.” Send all ideas to Crystal, including your budgetary contribution, by Friday, September 18.
These items have been decided:
Timing: January 1-February 28
Theme: Go Anywhere with a Book (borrowing from Demco)
Travel/Staycation ideas were tossed out in support of theme
Publicity: Crystal will prepare a brief blurb for the December enewsletter with the info we have decided. More details will be put in January enewsletter, which will be issued in mid-December.
BLOH: We will have a BLOH at the end of February to tie in, and will hold at Farr and CVRL
Numbers: Plan for 500 registration, 300 to finish
Undecided items (please send info/ideas to Crystal for compilation/distribution to group):
Budget: How much does each branch have to contribute from 2009 budget?
Prizes: Incentives? Prize Drawings? Coupons?Eligibility for prizes? What to give? If we do drawings, do them online or on paper? Pursue Community Sponsorships?
Reviews: Online only? Use reviews as a requisite for prize drawings?
