JOB TITLE:Behaviour Support Assistant

REPORT TO:Assistant Head Teacher in charge of behaviour

GRADE:Kent Range 5

Purpose: To oversee the school isolation and exclusion provisions. To support AHT in their role and help ensure that students with Social Mental and Emotional Health (SMEH) difficulties are appropriately supported. Play a key part in ensuring that students with difficulties are supported and strategies and interventions are implemented to ensure that these students do not prevent the effective teaching and learning of other students.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities Include:

Behaviour

  1. To oversee the schools isolation and exclusion provisions and ensure student compliance with procedures in the facilities on a daily basis.
  1. To lead on and provide support to individual students or groups on pre-planned activities both in terms of the school’s behaviour support and modification programmes and to facilitate group work for other vulnerable students as directed.
  1. To work with students to assist them in modifying their behaviour through 1:1 mentoring relationships with identified students
  1. Challenge students using a high degree of emotional intelligence to minimise difficult situations escalating.
  1. To assist with the investigation of incidents, including taking statements from students and to contribute to the writing of Reports for students who have been excluded from school such as Pen Pictures and case studies
  1. Keep appropriate records for all students subject to behaviour support plans.To assist in the writing of regular reports and reviews of student progress; to assist with the general administration of records.
  1. Meet with, organize and evaluate outside agencies as the school’s representative to refer students for additional support, as directed by the AHT.
  1. To plan and prepare for looked after children review meetings (PEPs).

Support

  1. They will liaise and work with parents and carers on a regular basis to ensure that they are aware of the progress of their child and preventive strategies that could help develop the behaviour inside and outside of school developing positive relationships
  1. Provide in-class support for those students who may need assistance to have a successful reintegration back into class.
  1. Ensure safeguarding and promoting children and young people’s welfare is key to decision making.

Communication

  1. Liaise between and communicating effectively with:

-staff

-parents

-students

-outside agencies

  1. Ensure that staff are informed of the support organised for individual students and their progress.

Miscellaneous

  1. Supervise SMEH students on some off-site activities in agreement with the AHT Inclusion.
  1. To maintain stocks of learning resources and appropriate work for students to complete in the Inclusion Room
  1. To undertake such tasks as reasonably requested by the Headteacher, or on their behalf, as are appropriate to this job description.
  1. To promote the School’s Equal Opportunities policy in carrying out all areas of the post.
  1. To have due regard to the Health and Safety at Work legislation in carrying out all aspects of the post.
  1. To assist the staff member in charge of transition in supporting and developing children at risk on their move to Thamesview School.
  1. To assist in writing referrals for students who need additional support including EHCP statements
