LGBT Taskforce Spirit of Equality Awards set for June 15 at Dallas City Hall;
Dallas Public Library will present events and activities to celebrate Pride Month

Dallas - June 2016 is national “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.” As Dallas continues on a path towards being a world-class city, the Dallas LGBT Task Force works to ensure that our city is inclusive and committed to equality for all individuals of the LGBT communities. The Task Force will celebrate Pride month by hosting the Spirit of Equality Awards at noon on Wednesday June 15 at Dallas City Hall, 1500 Marilla St., in the flag room. Awards will be presented to advocates and allies.

Councilmember Adam Medrano, District 2, will present a proclamation signed by Mayor Mike Rawlings designating June as Pride Month in Dallas.

The Dallas Public Library will host a series of events and activities to celebrate LGBT Pride Month. These activities include:

Displays:

·  Dallas West Branch: Teen/YA book display

·  Hampton-Illinois Branch/DVD display

·  Oak Lawn Branch: The Pride Wall up for all of June the word "Pride" will be spelled out in 45-inch rainbow letters. Individuals will be encouraged write messages to show their pride and support for the LGBT community. The Oak Lawn Library Friends will sponsor an Artists Exhibition of work by LGBT artists focusing on the theme of PRIDE.

·  Renner Frankford Branch: Two displays 1) a display of books on transgender issues and 2) a display about the various pride symbols and what they mean beginning on June 7.

·  White Rock Hills Branch will have a display of LGBTQ authors and books along with a quiz about the history and authors of the LGBTQ movement. Those who participate in the quiz will receive a small prize. This display and program runs from June 1 to June 30.

·  Monday, June 6, 1 p.m. - Dallas’ Rainbow Families

Bachman Lake Branch:

Program includes a storytime for ages 6 and under, a short movie, and crafts for all ages.

·  Wednesday, June 15, 6 p.m. - Film Screening of “Taking Back Oak Lawn”

J. Erik Jonsson Central, 4th floor Pollack Performance Space
A documentary film by Steven Pomerantz who will be in attendance for a special Q&A after the screening of this documentary about the recent attacks on LGBT members in Oak Lawn and the communities subsequent response.

·  Wednesday, June 15, 6 p.m. – Film Screening of “Freeheld”

Lakewood Branch Library:
The Lakewood Library will show the movie "Freeheld". Freeheld is based on the true story of Detective Lieutenant Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore), who spent 25 years investigating tough cases in Ocean County, New Jersey, protecting the rights of victims and putting her life on the line.

·  North Oak Cliff Branch Library: Pride Month Literature Trivia Contest
How well do you know your LGBT authors? All this month The North Oak Cliff Branch Library will be having trivia questions for you to answer and win prizes! Ask for the questions at the Reference Desk or pick up the question sheet at the LGBT Book Section, correctly answer five questions, and win a prize!
