Newark Bay ADCP data collection.

There were three mobilizations of ADCP data collection in the spring of 1994. Each of the surveys spanned daylight hours or a full tidal cycle.

Trip 1 - May 8, 1994

Trip 2 – May 22, 1994

Trip 3 – June 25, 1994

Six transect ranges were collected. These were

1.  The west end of Kill van Kull near Bergen Point

2.  The upper end of Arthur Kill just as it expands into Newark bay

3.  Lower Newark Bay

4.  Upper Newark Bay

5.  mouth of Hackensack River in upper Newark Bay

6.  mouth of Passaic River in upper Newark Bay

These transects were taken approximately every 1-4 hours over the tidal cycle. Table 1 below summarizes the transects collected.

ADCP XYZ file format

Time, offset distance (ft), depth (ft), current speed (cm/s), direction (deg N), vertical velocity (cm/s), backscatter intensity (counts)

Time format is e.g. 065716.56 = 6:57:16.56 (hour,min,sec)

ADCP file naming convention

PASR107.xyz => PAS R1 12 = Passaic study, Range 1, hour 7

Note the approximate hour reference in the naming, since the time to run each transect may have been 10-30 minutes.

The subdirectory sets the date of the data (DON’T merge files to single directory)

Salinity/TSM data profiles

Along with the ADCP transects each range had three vertical profiles collected which were analyzed in the laboratory for salinity and TSM. The three stations are from a to c (left to right looking upstream; west on range 2)

There are three files, one for each trip.

Passaic1.asc the May 8 ,1994 survey

Passaic2.asc the May 22 ,1994 survey

Passaic3.asc the June 25 ,1994 survey

The data in the files is formatted as :

Time Range/ Depth Salinity Suspended

(hr:min) Station (ft) (ppt) Sediment (mg/l)
