WHY YL COLLEGE

  1. Mission statement of YL
  2. Still adolescents
  3. Closer to hs kids than ms kids are
  4. Could be the most crucial transition in our spiritual life
  5. Graduating college seems to be a watershed moment. If people are following Christ when they graduate, this seems to be a good indicator if they will go for the long-term.
  6. How many kids/friends have you had that have gone bonkers in college, and not come back? Yet.
  7. The sheer number of unreached, lost college kids. No rules. Broken.
  8. Lots of other campus ministries but not many doing outreach.
  9. College kids are some of the most teachable, resourceful people on earth. There are no rules. Sometimes that hurts. Sometimes that is beautiful.
  10. Provide workers for the Kingdom of God.

WHAT IS YL COLLEGE?

REACH BUILD LAUNCH

It’s not that different. But there are a bunch of things that are different.

  1. Staff or volunteer? More are staff-run but Va Tech, OU, and Miami of Ohio both have volunteer-led teams.
  2. What are lost college kids into? And let’s do it better than them.
  3. Club needs to be a little different. The classic mixer, 2 songs, skit, 2 songs, run-on, one content song, talk doesn’t work as well.

DISTINCTIVES OF JMU YLC:

  1. Focused on Jesus. Completely.
  2. Prayer. Ministry without prayer is the highest form of arrogance.
  3. And I’m guilty.
  4. Chuck’s letter.
  5. LOST KIDS. We have to guard this with everything we have. It’s the heart of the Father. Jesus didn’t come to seek and save the righteous but sinners. It’s also the DNA of YL.
  6. STUDENT-RUN.

A LOOK BACK:

  1. “Summer camp” at Rockbridge in May. 200 kids 11 schools
  2. Weekend camp at end of Sept. with 560 kids and leaders! 14 schools and 5 w/no YLC!
  3. YL College week this coming May 29-June 1. Over 600 spots reserved right now. We still have room!
  4. 9 clubs in our division last year. 17 this year!
  5. EASTERN, George Mason, Howard, MD, Shepherd, JMU, ODU, Cincy, OSU, Ohio Univ., West Virginia, Marshall, Cornell/Ithaca, Virginia Tech, Miami, Ohio Univ.
  6. BLESSINGS FROM IT! Every school in the country that has started YLC has more volunteer leaders placed in hs and ms except one. JMU!! Dang it!

A LOOK AHEAD:

  1. Opportunities: 3 types of college kids:
  2. Totally lost college kids that have no interest in Jesus and/or have never heard of YL.
  3. IV and Cru are doing some good work. But they are not reaching most of the lost college kids.
  4. Sharp campaigners. We will help them get their feet under them and help get them to be YL leaders.
  5. Kids who have had some experience with YL but are still dead. They are lost.
  6. Also the potential of continuing on with kids that didn’t get it. We used to just be able to pray for them. But now we can have someone who wants to take the baton.
  7. Show slide of graduation. Lord if only you had given me one more month. One more year. I prayed for some kids to fail.

2.Don’t wait for your AD to ask you to do it. Ask him or her to sit down and have coffee. Have a couple of suggestions for how things can begin.
