Student job description – IT Helpdesk Support – Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Ucluelet, BC

Parks Canada is a large federal agency with office or presence in every province and territory. IT us a Microsoft Windows based computing environment with several networks across the country.

We are looking for a student who has completed at least one year of study in a recognized college or University to join the IT team to provide IT support. A moderate computer knowledge and skills is required for this job. The student will be part of the BC-Yukon Support Team and Coastal BC Field Unit which includes Fort Langley National Historic Site, Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard National Historic Sites, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Vancouver Office, but we work with teams across Canada. The student will experience a large IT operation and be part of a dynamic team. He/she will attend bi-weekly technical calls with other IT Staff across the country to discuss a variety of technical and support issues, developments and projects.

The job entails the following main activities:

·  IT helpdesk support, processing computer orders, shipping/receiving, building computers

·  Liaising with the employees to ensure the required software is deployed correctly.

·  Orientation to the employees on the proper use of computers and software where necessary.

·  Installation computer parts and accessories such as memories, hard drives, video and other interface cards etc.

·  Coordinating computer distributions from a central hub to different buildings or offices in more remote locations.

·  User account or ID management including creation for new network users, modifying accounts and access for employees who move around.

·  Software installs. We troubleshoot issues and find solutions, and share solutions with our teammates. We are in charge of data access, and apply rights to data and shared devices. We are emergency assistance when servers, links, or computers go down.

The student will take client requests, record tickets or actions, and follow through to resolution and closeout. There is no programming or coding beyond some basic scripting, and no web development in our shop. The student may assist with information gathering and planning for specific site projects.

As a team member you will shadow a regular IT support staff for different tasks to learn and obtain experience in various support activities and tasks. We are looking for someone who speaks English very well. Most of our clients communicate over the phone or email or chat; it is essential that you communicate well. French/English Bilingual is an asset, but not required. We are looking for someone who likes to help clients and can follow through.

We would like someone who can follow directions, and who asks questions when they need to. Self-motivation is key. A driver’s license is essential and student responsible for transportation to and from work site. Shared accommodation will be available at a reasonable market rate.

Student should know that there is shared accommodation available for this position the student will be required to pay a reasonable market price for rent. Students are responsible to provide their own transportation to the park and to their work site each day.
