IDC now expects tablet shipments to reach 227.4 million units worldwide in 2013, down slightly from a previous forecast of 229.3 million but still 57.7 percent above 2012 shipments. The market will likely continue to grow, but that growth will be driven more by emerging markets than IDC previously expected; by 2017 IDC expects worldwide shipments to be nearly 407 million units.

On the enterprise side, IDC notes that right now, in fact, the tablet is pretty minor but is growing: It notes that tablet adoption in sectors like education and retail collectively accounted for 10% of all tablet sales in 2012, and that will only grow to 20% by 2017.

IDC also notes that it’s starting to see more developed markets already take their feet off the gas in terms of rapid adoption, with “maturing markets such as the U.S. now expected to cede share more rapidly to emerging markets such as Asia/Pacific.” It predicts that by 2017 there will be 407 million tablets shipped.

Tablet Shipments Slow in the Second Quarter As Vendors Look To Capitalize on a Strong Second Half of 2013, According to IDC

"The tablet market is still evolving and vendors can rise and fall quickly as a result," said Ryan Reith, Program Manager for IDC's Mobility Tracker programs. "Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run. To date, Android has been far more successful than the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fueled products are starting to make notable progress into the market."

Shipments of Tablet PCs Expected to More Than Double Those of Notebook PCs in 2014, NPD DisplaySearch Reports

Sort Date: 07292013

SANTA CLARA, CALIF., July 29, 2013— Shipments of tablet PCs are expected to reach nearly 364 million worldwide in 2014, more than doubling the projected 177 million shipments of standard notebook PC and ultra-slim PCs, according to the NPD DisplaySearchQuarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report. In January, NPD DisplaySearch forecast that tablet PC shipments would exceed notebook PC shipments in 2013, and our latest research reveals that tablet PC shipments will continue to increase across all regions, particularly in emerging markets, as notebook PC shipments decline through 2017. Tablet PC shipments are projected to reach 589 million by 2017, while notebook PC and ultra-slim PC are forecast at 176 million.

“The PC market is clearly shifting away from notebooks and toward tablets,” said Richard Shim, senior analyst with NPD DisplaySearch. “Supply chain indications reveal that previously planned production of notebook PCs is being pulled back due to declining adoption and that brands are gradually increasing the number of tablet PC models in their product mixes. Panel and finished goods suppliers are also increasing production of displays and other components for tablets in order to keep up with the market changes.”

Tablets Excel in the Enterprise

ByStephanie Blanchard, Assistant Editor, and Lori Castle, Editor in Chief

Today’s mobile workforce doesn’t look to the past. No more dragging around a heavy laptop and antiquated features phone. More than ever, employees believe tablets and smartphones are “critical productivity tools.” Tablets in particular, have the potential to take over as the defacto device in the enterprise, as least for certain sectors such as field and sales.
Overall, according to Tablet Ownership 2013, a report by Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, “one-third of all American adults ages 18 and older own a tablet computer…” This is twice as many as one year ago.
Does that translate to the enterprise? According to the Good Technology Mobility Index Report Q1 2013, one out of four device activations in the workplace stems from a tablet, accounting for 27% of all device activations. The financial services industry, followed by business and professional services and insurance, are the verticals most likely to use tablets.

May 29, 2013 – Xplore Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: XPLR), manufacturer of the most powerful, longest-lasting and rugged tablet in the market, announced that its iX104C5 rugged tablet line is now compatible with Windows 8.

Tablets Take Over

5/6/2013

Bill Gates had a vision of a “computer on every desk and in every home,” and, by 2002, one billion PCs had been sold according to Gartner at the time. That number had been predicted to double by 2008, but it was precisely then the PC industry suffered its worst growth rate since 2002.
Now PCs are not just down, they are disappearing as both a consumer choice — from which much business use is driven — and as a corporate option. Tablets are officially taking over, but what are they really doing in the enterprise?

In its Q1 2013 report “Forecast: Devices by Operating System and User Type,” Gartner puts predicted worldwide tablet shipments at 197 million units in 2013, a 69.8% increase from 2012. This percentage is similar to the year over year growth from 2011 to 2012.
According to Changewave Research, (a service of 451 Research) overall business IT spending is set to improve in Q2 2013, led by smartphone and tablet demand. In its Q1 2013 survey (“Corporate Demand for Smartphones, Tablets & PCs”), 25% of respondents said their companies will be purchasing tablets for employees in Q2 2013. This is one point above the all-time high registered in the prior quarter survey.
