The Mason County Sheriff's Office is currently accepting applications for RESERVE DEPUTY SHERIFF.

Reserve Deputies are volunteers used to supplement patrol operations and special events within unincorporated MasonCounty. Serving as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff is a rewarding experience and is an excellent way to serve the community. Applicants must:

  • Be 21 years of age and be a US Citizen
  • Possess a valid WashingtonState driver’s license
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have no felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within past 5 years
  • Have no conviction of crimes that would prohibit a Washington citizen from the legal right to possess a firearm
  • Meet the requirements of WAC 139-05-810 outlined below:

WAC 139-05-810

Basic training requirement for reserve officers.

(1) For the purposes herein:
(a) "Reserve officer" includes any law enforcement officer who does not serve as a law enforcement officer of this state on a full-time basis, but who, when called by such agency into active service, is fully commissioned on the same basis as full-time officers to enforce the criminal laws of this state; and
(b) "Field assignment" includes any period of active service wherein the assigned officer is expected to take routine and/or special enforcement actions, independently or otherwise, in the same manner and capacity as a full-time officer with such assignment.
(2) For the purposes of the Washington Mutual Aid Peace Officers Powers Act, chapter 10.93 RCW, every individual who is commissioned as a specially commissioned reserve peace officer in this state will obtain a basic reserve certificate as a precondition of the exercise of authority pursuant to such act; provided that, any individual possessing a basic reserve certificate issued by the commission prior to January 1, 1989, will be deemed to have met this requirement.
(3) Upon approval of an applicant's eligibility to participate in the reserve process, the applicant's employing agency must submit to the commission all requested records, information and proof of background check as a precondition of participation within such process.
(4) Each applicant that has been offered a conditional offer of employment as a reserve officer must take and successfully pass a psychological and a polygraph test or similar assessment procedure, administered pursuant to RCW 43.101.105 (2)(a)(i) and (ii).
(5) A basic reserve certificate will be issued by the commission to any individual who successfully completes a basic course of instruction for reserve officers as prescribed and required by the commission.
(6) Requirements of subsection (5) of this section may be waived in whole or in part. A request for waiver must be made under WAC 139-03-030. In reviewing such request, the commission will consider the following:
(a) An evaluation of an applicant's experience and training accomplishments;
(b) The fact that an individual is a regular full-time commissioned law enforcement officer who leaves full-time employment; or
(c) The fact that an officer has been certified in accordance with the requirements of subsection (2) of this section, and thereafter has engaged in regular and commissioned law enforcement employment without break or interruption in excess of twelve months duration.

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs serve at the discretion of the Mason County Sheriff and are not part of the Mason County Deputy Sheriff’s Guild. Once the application is accepted, and a “conditional offer of employment” is made to the reserve applicant, the applicant must successfully pass:

  • A psychological evaluation,
  • Apolygraph examination,
  • Abackground investigation,
  • Amedical evaluation, and
  • A Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission approved Basic Reserve OfficerAcademy either conducted by the sponsoring agency or in cooperation with another law enforcement agency.

As a Reserve Deputy Sheriff, You Will Be Expected To:

  • Interact with the community in a positive manner to cooperatively reach resolution of community needs and to foster positive, effective, and lasting relationships between the community and sheriff’s office.
  • Give advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public.
  • Exercise powers of arrest and control; defend self, other officers, and use force up to deadly force if required.
  • Arrest, search, transport, and confine offenders.
  • Maintain good physical condition, agility, and coordination to allow performance of the essential tasks of a deputy sheriff.
  • Achieve, demonstrate, and maintain minimum department standards of proficiency and performance in accordance with policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the sheriff’s office.
  • Respond to all calls for service; secure crime scenes; assist in investigations; gather evidence; obtain statements.
  • Interview persons with complaints and inquiries, and attempts to make the proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities.
  • Provide a minimum of 16 hours of service per month to the sheriff’s office to remain as an active Mason County Reserve Deputy Sheriff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Question: How can I become a Reserve Deputy for the Mason County Sheriff's Office?

Question: Can Reserve’s serve as full-time officers?
Answer: No, reserve officers, by definition, are other than full-time officers and are not to be used in lieu of a certified Washington peace officer.
Question: Is there an Equivalency process to become a Reserve Officer?
Answer: Yes, please review WAC 139-05-825. The sponsoring agency must contact the Training Commission to make application to request recognition of the equivalent reserve officer.
Question: If I was a reserve officer or a fully commissioned officer in another state can my training and certificate be transferred?
Answer: Yes, if your training and experience qualifies that is up to the agency that accepts you as a reserve. Please review WAC 139-05-825. The sponsoring agency must contact the Training Commission to make application to request recognition of the equivalent reserve officer.
Question: How long does my Reserve certificate stay current?
Answer: Once you have been recognized as a Reserve officer, your certificate stays current unless you have a break or interruption in service as a reserve for more than twelve months. Keep in mind, a break in service of (a) more than twelve but less than twenty-four months must successfully complete the requirements of RCW 43.101.080(19) and the comprehensive reserve final test proctored by the commission; (b) more than twenty-four but less than thirty-six months must successfully pass the psychological and polygraph tests, complete the criminal history and background check, and successfully pass the comprehensive reserve final test proctored by the commission; (c) more than thirty-six months break in service requires the person to attend the basic reserve law enforcement academy.

The Reserve Application consists of four parts:

  • Part 2 is a Supplemental Questionnaire for Reserve Deputy Applicants.

All four parts MUST be fully completed for an application to be processed. Faxed and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted. As a precondition to the exercise of extra-territorial enforcement powers under the Washington Mutual Aid Officer Powers Act, RCW 10.93.090, an individual who is commissioned as a reserve officer must possess a Basic Reserve Certificate issued by the Training Commission. That certificate is issued to any successful attendee of an accredited BasicReserveAcademy.
