Dear Student

Our team would like to welcome you to Clova Ward/Strathmore Hospice based within Whitehills Health & Community Care Centre (WHCCC) in Forfar. The hospital is set in grounds on the east boundary outskirts of Forfar. We are a 20-bedded unit divided into 16 GP held beds providing medical, post-surgical and rehabilitative care, and a 4-bedded hospice providing palliative care.

The medical cover is currently provided by GPs from the four local practices in the Forfar/Kirriemuir areas with specialist input as required from the Palliative Care and Psychiatry of Old Age & Elderly Medicine consultants. Emergency cover is provided by the ‘Out of Hours’ service.

The ward staff also work closely with the multi-disciplinary team members including:- Doctors, Social Work Department, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Community Nursing Staff, Pharmacists, Chaplain, Volunteers and Complimentary Therapists.

On arrival at the ward students will meet their mentor/associate mentor as well as other members of the nursing team. All staff members are willing to help students to achieve their competencies and provide support.

The ward works to a traditional shift system ie Early (7.00am-2.30pm), Late (1.30-9.00pm) and Nightshift (9.00pm-7.00am). Students will be allocated shifts in accordance with instructions from the university or college. Please telephone the ward to obtain your first week’s off-duty.

There is a canteen facility available Monday-Friday within the hospital providing hot and cold meals as well as sandwiches. There are also vending machines available.

There is a free car park at the front entrance to the hospital, however the hospital is also easily accessible by bus.
