ESSENTIAL UNIT 1 (E01)

(Music Fundamentals)

Unit Statement: This is an introductory unit. The student registered in this unit has never played neither a woodwind, brass, percussion, or stringed instrument before. The outcomes in E01 will give the student the fundamentals in music theory to enhance enjoyment and techniques of the particular instrument the student has chosen to play.

Essential Outcomes: (assessed for mastery)

  1. The Student Willexplain and label each instrument part of the chosen instrument. Refer to Instrumental Music appendix for pictures.
  1. TSW state several rules specific to the chosen instrument.
  1. TSWdemonstrate and explain correct handling, care, assemble and disassemble of his/her instrument.
  1. TSWapply correct posture by sitting in the chair properly and demonstrating correct hand position. Along with rest, ready and playing position.
  1. TSW identify and apply basic music theory knowledge which will include identifying the treble/bass clef (depending upon the clef of his/her chosen instrument), name lines and spaces on the staff, identify the value of whole, half and quarter notes in common time.
  1. TSW recognize and explain the time signature of 4/4 and 2/4.
  1. TSW identify and explain the repeat sign.
  1. TSW demonstrate an ability to play an instrument to a beginner level of proficiency. This will include playing approximately 6 to 8 notes with different melodies and rhythms which include whole, half and quarter notes and rests.

Suggested Evaluation:

1. A written music theory test: TSW identify:

a)notes on a staff (TSW 4)

b) value of notes/rests in common time(TSW 4, TSW 5)

c)count various rhythms in 4/4 and 2/4 time (TSW 5)

d)identify and explain the repeat sign. (TSW 6)

2. A practical test: TSW be asked:

a)to indentify all of the parts of the instrument (TSW 1)

b)to indentify the rules for the particular instrument (TSW 2)

c)to assemble and disassemble his/her instrument to demonstrate correct handling and care. This may be noted and evaluated during regular music classes. (TSW 3)

d)to show all the positions with proper posture (TSW 4)

e)to play various lines of music which were practiced in class (TSW 7)
