PLANNING
In this unit you studied how Hinton explored ideas such as class conflict, the importance of belonging to a group or family and male adolescent friendships. You also wrote an essay that led you to think deeply about the issues explored in The Outsiders.
For this task you should:
Re-read your work on The Outsiders, the exercises you did and the feedback from your teachers. Your focus is on Hinton’s exploration of two big ideas and how these are conveyed through characterisation (concentrate on 2 or 3 characters) and setting, so make your own notes under the following headings—Ideas, Characterisation, Setting. Look at the table below which contains some ideas to get you going.
Ideas explored in the novel / Characterisation / SettingImportance of belonging
The gang gives the characters the support structure they lack at home and in society. / The gang members are like a family.
‘I could have gotten one of the gang members to come along, one of the four boys Darry, Soda and I have grown up with and consider family.’p3 / The Curtis house was always open. ‘Our front door is always unlocked in case one of the boys is hacked off at his parents and needs a place to lay over and cool off.’p105
Not belonging
The greasers were outsiders. They were cut off from mainstream society by poverty and hardship. / Greasers felt they were on the bottom rung of the class system. ‘We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class. p 3 and this was reinforced by the Socs. ‘”You know what a greaser is?” Bob asked. “White trash with long hair.” p 67 The greasers find it hard to empathise with the Socs and it is only when they meet as individuals, eg, Ponyboy’s meeting with Cherryat the drive-in that they find common ground. When Ponyboy discovers Cherry likes watching sunsets, he thought,‘Maybe the two worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We saw the same sunset.’ p41 / Social and economic divisions are emphasised by the distinction made between the east and west side of Ponyboy’s town. The Socs were‘the jet set, the West-side rich kids…’ the term “greaser” …‘is used to class all us boys on the East Side.’ p 2-3
Masculinity — Hinton challenges traditional ideas about masculinity.
Hinton, in using Ponyboy as the narrator, allows the reader to view the world through his eyes and empathise with his experiences. / Ponyboy,in order to survive, follows traditional ideas of male toughness yet he is sensitive and enjoys the beauty in sunsets, reading, poetry andpainting. Although he is with the greasers he is not really like them but feels he has to hide his true nature. Johnny recognises this and writes in his letter, ‘Don’t be so bugged over being a greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want.’p 216 / The church at Jay Mountain provided a safe haven where Ponyboy couldbe himself. ‘I couldn’t tell Two-Bit or Steve or even Darry about the sunrise and clouds and stuff.’ p 75
When you have written lots of ideas under each heading think about which form of presentation you will use and how you might talk about Hinton’s ideas in an interesting way.[You might like to interview Susan Hinton and actor Rob Lowe who played Sodapop in the 1983 film, ‘The Outsiders’ or create a podcast where Ponyboy commentson the way the novel is put together in terms of characterisation, setting and ideas explored. You might like to be an academic creating a podcast for your students or you might just like to be yourself reviewing the novel on Books & Arts Daily. You might even have some brilliant ideas about an exciting mini-series proposal.]
Write your script/review/proposal so that you sound more professional when it comes time to record.
Look at the marking criteria to see how you can maximise your marks. Make sure you have showcased your insights into some of the big ideas that Hinton is exploring in the novel.
PRESENTING YOUR ORAL
Practise, record, listen, change, refine and time your podcast/interview/review/proposal. When you are satisfied, you can submit it to your teacher for feedback before the due date or submit by the due date if you are happy with it.
HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK
