JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT CENTRES 2014

May 2014

Dear Player

Congratulations, you have been nominated to attend the Middlesex Hockey Association (MHA) Junior Development Centre (JDC) for 2014. This forms part of a nationwide programme for juniors and is the first step on hockey’s representative ladder. Sessions will be taken by qualified England Hockey(EH) coaches dedicated to developing your core skills in line with EH’s programme for junior players in this country.

MHA will be running a full JDC programme for boys and girls aged U13 to U17 at fourcentres across the county – Eastcote HC, PHC Chiswick, Southgate HC, and Teddington HC. There will be four training sessions followed by a festival of hockey match play between all players from the fourcentres in each age group and those returning from regional training (JRPC). The best players will then be selected for the MHA Junior Academy squads (JAC) for January 2015.

If you would like to take part in the JDC programme please complete the registration form below. Tick your age group, your preferred local centre and the five sessions you can attend and return it with your payment by the due date to the address below.

You will also need to register with EH if you are a new player to the county programme.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT CENTRE SESSIONS

Stick, Gum Shield and Shin Pads (compulsory)

Suitable warm/waterproof sports clothing and astroturf trainers

Snacks and plenty of water or a non-carbonated sports drink

INFORMATION

‘The Single System’, set up by England Hockey (EH), is now in its sixth year.

Levels one and two of the system, the JDC and JAC, are delivered by counties with the JRPC Tier 1 and 2 delivered by EH. It is a scheme based on scientific research, or the Long Term Athlete Development Programme of periodisation in sport, and has been widely adopted by other major sports in England.

The Single System is a process of delivery with a structured pathway designed to enable, not just junior players, but coaches and officials, to fulfil their potential in an equitable, transparent and consistent manner across the country. It is designed to give equal opportunities and equity in coaching consistent skills whether you live in Middlesex or any other county. It will ensure that suitable levels of coaching and competition are offered at appropriate stages of development to fulfil potential, be it as a club or International player, coach or official.

1. JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT CENTRES (JDCs)

This is the first level designed to deliver the development of core skills above school and club at local training centres for boys and girls aged U13-U17 in any one calendar year. JDCs are open to players nominated by schools and clubs with either current or potential talent in hockey and in Middlesex will run from August to November. Coaching will be delivered to an England Hockey syllabus by qualified coaches and in addition to training there will be festival match play amongst all local county based JDCs. Following the JDCs players will receive feedback via the EH on-line player system and the best players will be selected to attend Junior Academy Centre (JACs). JAC players not nominated for junior regional training (JRPC) will return to the JDC to begin the next cycle. JRPC players who have not been selected for tier 1 squads will re-enter the system at the JDC festival to trial for JAC with those who have been training with the JDC.

2. JUNIOR ACADEMY CENTRES (JACs)

This is the second step on the England Hockey development ladder and formerly county hockey. Selected players will receive extended coaching in core skills and match play from qualified coaches with competition between the JACs within regions. JACs will run from November to May in a given season. Following the JAC programme, coaches will nominate players to attend a series of training sessions and assessments at the Junior Regional Performance Centres (JRPC) for potential regional players.

JACs are for boys and girls from U13-U17 and all age groups will participate in the Southern Counties Championship.

Middlesex are seeking to coach approximately 24-26 boys and 24-26 girls in each age group. Squads of up to 30 may be selected in the younger age groups. Squads of up to 16 players per match date will then represent the JAC in matches. Players selected for National Age Groups (NAGS) following regional activity will not take part in JAC activity.
