CHS SCALE PASS-OFF

“You know your scales when you can do anything with them”

NOTICE: In order to pass-off a scale level, you must score a minimum of 9pts on the Scale Pass-off Rubric.

LEVEL 1—Play each note around the circle of 4ths (choose the number of counts you will play each note, the number of counts you will rest between each note, and the tempo [metronome marking])

LEVEL 2—Play 3-note scale in all 12 keys around the circle of 4ths (play eighth-notes at a minimum of quarter=72)

LEVEL 3—Play 5-note scale in all 12 keys around the circle of 4ths (play eighth-notes at a minimum of quarter=72)

LEVEL 4 (Certificate)—Play 9-note scale in all 12 keys around the circle of 4ths (play eighth-notes at a minimum of quarter=80)

LEVEL 5—Play each major scale and its relative minor around the circle of 4ths (play eighth-notes at a minimum of quarter=96)

LEVEL 6 (Pin)—Play each major, dominant, and dorian minor scale around the circle of 4ths using articulation patterns of slur 2/tongue 2 or tongue 2/slur 2 (dominant=lowered 7, dorian=lowered 3 & 7) eighth-notes at quarter=80)

LEVEL 7—Play each major scale using the root movements of (C, B, Bb, A, Ab, G, Gb, F, E, Eb, D, Db, C and C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C) eighth-notes at quarter=100)

LEVEL 8— Play 7-note whole tone scales (all whole steps) in all 12 keys (eighth-notes at quarter =92)

LEVEL 9—Play each major scale and 1-3-5-7-9 arpeggio (sixteenth-notes using eighth-notes for the arpeggio)

LEVEL 10 (Musicianship Award)—Play Unisonal Scales Part II, No. 1 at quarter=80.

ADVANCED SCALE LEVELS

LEVEL 11

·  Woodwinds—Full Range major scales in all 12 keys (fast and even as possible)

·  Brass—1.5 octave scales in all 12 keys (fast and even as possible)

·  Percussion—2-8va scales in all 12 keys (fast and even as possible)

LEVEL 12

·  Woodwinds—Full Range chromatic scales in all 12 keys (fast and even as possible)

·  Brass—1.5 octave chromatic scales in all 12 keys (fast and even as possible)

·  Percussion—2 octave scales in all 12 keys (fast and even as possible)

LEVEL 13—Melodic minor scales in all 12 keys (woodwinds/Perc. 2 octaves)

LEVEL 14—Harmonic minor scales in all 12 keys (woodwinds/Perc. 2 octaves)

LEVEL 15— Major and Minor scales in 3rds one octave (woodwinds/Perc. 2 octaves)

LEVEL 16— Major and Minor scales in 4ths one octave (woodwinds/Perc. 2 octaves)
