Course Syllabus 2016-2017

Welcome to Tippit Middle School! I am glad to have you in my class this year! Please read the information below carefully with your parents. It will provide you with the information and tools needed for you to be successful in 7th Grade Math.

Solving Equations and Inequalities

Finding Ratios, Rates, and Proportions

Linear Relationships and Constant Rates of Change

Textbooks:

Students will use a consumable textbook that will stay in the classroom. Pages may be torn out of the book and taken home. The textbook may be accessed by students online. The website also contains helpful videos and interactive practice. Your child will be given login information to access the online textbook.

Google Classroom:

Almost every week, students will have at least one assignment to complete in Google Classroom. Time will be given in class to complete these assignments, but they can be done from home as well from any internet ready device, including smartphones.

Daily Assignments: Expect to have a math assignment nearly every day. Practice is an essential component in mastering the skills they are taught in class. Students are typically given some time in class to work on the assignment. Assignments become homework if they are not completed in class. Assignments will be graded in class the following day and discussed when students meet with the teacher in small groups.

Students receive 2 homework grades per week. One is a combined grade for the week’s assignments. The other is a quiz given almost every Friday over what we’ve covered that week. A detailed rubric showing how homework grades are given is available on our class website.

*Remember: All assignments are listed on the class website.*

Missing Work: Reports will be posted weekly. It is the student’s responsibility to manage their missing assignments. Missing assignments are recorded as a zero in the grade book until they are submitted.

Extra copies: If a student loses a printed assignment, they should print a new copy from Google Classroom or make other arrangements with the teacher. Extra copies of printed assignments are intended for absent students.

Grades:

The district policy for middle school grading is as follows:

60% Major Grades: Summative Learning Grades – Minimum 3 per nine weeks:

Tests

Projects

40% Minor Grades: Formative Learning Grades:

Class work/homework

Notebook checks

Homework Quizzes

Gradebooks are updated on a weekly basis. Check Parent Connect Often!

Late Work:For late assignments that are not considered make-up work, the following penalties apply:

10 points deducted for the first day

20 points deducted for the second day

30 points deducted for the third day

*If homework/classwork is not completed, the student will be assigned an after school detention to be served the following week.

*Persistent offenders will be assigned Saturday School.

Make-Up Work:If you are absent you will have the opportunity to make up the work unless it is a truancy issue. You will be allowed the same number of days of your absence to make up the work you missed unless the assignment was made prior to your absence. It is your responsibility to turn in missed work!

Failed Assessments: Students may improve any test grade below 70 by correcting the problems they missed, according to teacher-specified requirements.

Tutorials: Math tutorials are available before school, and after school. Tutorial schedules vary, so please check our class website for the week’s tutorial times before planning to attend.
