Vocabulary Terms for Quiz
- Figurative language – A tool an author uses to help the reader visualize, or see, what is happening in a story or poem
- Alliteration – The repetition of a consonant sound at the beginning of words
- Simile – A comparison using like or as to compare two unlike objects
- Metaphor – A comparison that states one thing is something else, but does not use like or as to make the comparison.
- Imagery – Writing that involves one or more of your five senses (hearing, tasting, touching, smelling, and seeing)
- Personification – Giving human qualities, feelings, actions, or characteristics to nonhuman things
- Symbolism – When one thing stands for or represents something else
- Onomatopoeia – The representation of sounds in word form
- Narrative – A type of writing that involves telling a story or describes a sequence of events in an incident
- Connotation – The suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word
- Denotation – The exact, literal meaning of a word
- Stanza – A group of lines with similar length and pattern which forms a unit within a poem
Hooks (will need to match examples with the type of hook)
- A thought – words/phrases/sentences that are the thoughts of a character
- Scary, exciting, or intense moment – set up a mysterious tone or mood through good description
- Conversation/dialogue – show dialogue between two characters
- Fast action – description of an occurrence of exciting or dramatic action
- Flashback – the character thinks back to an important detail about the story
- Famous quote – quote from someone that makes a connection to the outside world for the reader
- Statistic/fact – a hook typically used in non-fiction writing
- Rhetorical question – asks a question that may have an obvious answer
Writing Process (will need to know the order for quiz)
- Brainstorm/generate ideas – this is the first step of the writing process
- Prewrite – this is the second step of the writing process in which you organize your ideas
- Draft – this is the third stage in which you begin writing the narrative/essay/etc.
- Share & respond – this is the fourth stage of the writing process in which you give your writing to others in order to get feedback
- Revise – this is the fifth stage of the writing process where you work on improving the content of your writing
- Edit – this is the sixth stage of the writing process in which you correct spelling, grammar and punctuation errors
- Publish – this is the final stage of the writing process in which you produce a final copy or product
