8th Grade Comprehensive Science III

2017-2018

MR. LOVETT

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This class is truly different in a very exciting way. Our most central purpose is to immerse already exceptional minds into the territory of scientific thinking and practices that go far beyond the standard classroom. Throughout the year, essential ideas and cutting edge topics in every scientific field will be presented and discussed through new and stimulating approaches.

The unique nature of this class allows students to really understand and value science through hands-on discovery and progressive discussions, as well traditional and established routines of learning.

COURSE OUTLINE:

This year will be full of many interesting and important topics. Students will be expected to implement all of the scientific knowledge accumulated in their two previous years of Comprehensive Science instruction, along with newly learned understandings. They will be required to apply the methods and concepts expected of them at this level and at this particular school. Lucky for us, these themes are all enjoyable and exciting! We will visit each of the following topics using Inquiry Based and Visible Learning throughout the year:

Unit 1 – Nature of Science, Matter

Unit 2 – Chemistry

Unit 3 – Astronomy

Unit 4 – More Astronomy

In addition to mastering these major areas and the several other minor topics that are included within, students will be required to complete many projects and labs. The Science SSA also is administered in 8th grade (replacing FCAT in 2017) - this important exam requires and receives much review and preparation. There will not be a Final Exam given but a District Midterm will also be taken.

GUIDELINES:

In addition to following the Student Code of Conduct, all students must learn and abide by the following 5 basic class rules so that instructional time remains productive and fair. Failure to do so will result in strict school sanctioned discipline.

1. No Food or Drink Allowed

2. No Running, Throwing or Reckless Behavior

3. Listen to Others

4. Always Use Appropriate and Respectful Language

5. Stay on Task and Focused At All Times

*Specific routines and further classroom expectations are discussed, practiced and enforced throughout the year.

EVALUATION:

A student’s grade will reflect performance in several areas. Summative Assessments (for example, Unit Tests) will combine to form the bulk of a student’s grade (75%). Formative Assessments (for example, Lab Work) also factor into a student’s grade (25%)

Grades are organized and calculated electronically and the resulting figures will be available at all times to both the student and the parent. Grades and other information will be accessible through HAC. This site allows great communication and information for students, teachers and parents.

ABSENCE:

Excused absences will allow for the same amount of make-up time as the time missed. For example, if a student is absent for 3 days, he or she will be given 3 days to complete missed work. It is, however, the students’ responsibility to pick up such work and submit it, completed, in the time allowed. This includes scheduling any missed tests, labs or quizzes. Any other work turned in after the due date will be accepted in most circumstances but with a deduction in points - typically one point removed per day late.

PROBLEMS:

When necessary, students will receive a warning for failure to follow any classroom or school rules before further steps. Major violations will be dealt with appropriately, without the provision of a warning.

*Tardiness will be recognized

*Any harmful of unsafe actions with be strictly dealt with

*Chronic issues will be handled by the administration.

*Cheating and Plagiarism result in serious consequences

***All students and parents are required to read and sign the included Student Safety Agreement before Lab participation is permitted in the classroom. If (at any time throughout the year) the listed rules are broken, the student will forfeit the opportunity to participate in further activities.
