NEW BUSINESS

Ms. Flemings - The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a team of people representing various segments of the

community, parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, business/ industry people and other interested community members.

The purpose of a SAC is to assist in the preparation and evaluation of the results of the school improvement plan and to assist the principal with the annual school budget.

SACESTABLISHED BY-LAW

2015 FLORIDA STATUTES 1001.452 District and school advisory councils.—(1) ESTABLISHMENT.—(a) The district school board shall establish an advisory council for each school in the district and shall develop procedures for the election and appointment of advisory council members. Each school advisory council shall include in its name the words “school advisory council.”

Council membersrepresenting teachers, education support employees, students, and

parents shall be elected by their respective peer groups at the school in a fair and equitable manner as follows:

1. Teachers shallbe elected by teachers.

2. Education supportemployees shall be elected by education support employees.

3. Students shallbe elected by students (High school only).

4. Parents shallbe elected be elected by parents

SAC Committee Roles & Responsibilities

School Advisory Council functions shall include:

A. To facilitate the development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP)

B. To monitor implementation of the SIP

C. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SIP

D. To provide assistance in the preparation of the school’s annual budget

E. To make recommendations as to the alignment of instructional staffing and instructional materials to support the SIP

What is Title I?

•Title I is the largest federal assistance program for our nation’s schools.

•The goal of Title I is a higher quality of education for every child.

•The program serves millions of children in elementary and secondary schools each year. Charles Drew is a Title I school

Title I Programs Provide Supplemental Support

•Smaller classes;

•Additional teachers and paraprofessionals;

•Additional training for school staff;

•Extra time for instruction (Before and/or after school programs);

•Parental Involvement Activities; and/or

•A variety of supplemental teaching methods and materials.

Parent’s Rights

•Be involved and request regular meetings to expression your opinions and concerns;

•Be provided information on your child’s level of achievement on assessments like FCAT in reading/language arts, mathematics, and science;

•Request and receive information on the qualifications of your child’s teacher; and

•Be informed if your child is taught by a non-highly qualified teacher for four or more consecutive weeks.

School Accountability Report Card

•School Public Accountability Report (SPAR) provides parents and the community with important information about each public school

–Demographic data;

–School safety and climate for learning information;

–Academic data;

–Graduation rates;

–Class sizes;

–Teacher and staff information;

–Curriculum and instruction descriptions;

–Postsecondary preparation information; and

–AYP information.

•Every school has a School Advisory Council (SAC) composed of:

–Parents, Teachers, Other staff that works at the school, Principal and Students (at Middle and High School)
