Dementia Care Conference 2005

The Art and Science of Quality Care

The seventh annual dementia care conference, a collaboration of the Alzheimer’s Association, the Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, and Southern Caregiver Resource Center, focuses on providing education and support to family caregivers and professionals. Topics to be covered during this year’s event include: emotional opportunities with dementia, advances in research, the use of humor as a stress management tool for caregivers, pharmacological approaches, and three alternative therapies—pet, aroma, and music—to enhance quality of life in various settings. CEUs are available.

Addressing Behavior through Compassionate Communication

Communication is more than the ability to exchange words; it is the ability to connect with someone. Upon completion of this program, attendees will be able to articulate tips to improve their overall communication skills with memory-impaired individuals. They will also be able to identify communication techniques that can play a key role in coping with specific challenging behaviors such as wandering, shadowing, and agitation. All participants will receive a copy of the book Understanding Challenging Behaviors, thanks to a generous grant from the Samuel and Katherine French Charitable Trust.

Alzheimer’s and Anger

Caregivers often become emotional casualties during the process of providing care for their loved ones.

Upon completion of this program, attendees will understand various methods of dealing with feelings of anger—both within themselves and in the person they care for; recognize the unique factors that can contribute to caregiver anger; and articulate tips that will assist in the reduction of caregiver stress.

Making the Placement Decision:

A Workshop for Family Caregivers and Healthcare Professionals

The decision to move a loved one into any type of long-term care facility--whether an assisted living setting, skilled nursing facility, or dementia care unit--can be a complicated and overwhelming one. After attending this workshop, participants will be able to identify some of the emotional issues involved in placement, distinguish among various options for assistance along a continuum of care, articulate questions to ask when searching for a facility, and recognize methods to assist in easing the transition to placement.

Maximizing Your Memory

Medications and Alzheimer’s Disease:

Understanding the variety of medications available for treating behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease can be puzzling.
