EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND FINDINGS OF EXTERNAL REVIEW:

DEPARTMENT OF MARKETING AND SPORTS MANAGEMENT

  1. Executive Summary:

The Department of Marketing and Sports Management werereviewed by an external panel which included the following academics/and or experts in the fields of study:

  • Dr W Grobler (Chairperson)
  • Ms T Mosabala
  • Mr L A Masitenyane

The External review took place on 02 November 2009and the following programmes (N.Dip; B Tech; MTech; DTech (all in Marketing and Sports Management) were reviewed and are currently being offered by the department.

The following recommendations and commendations were extracted for the purposes of placing this document on the website (Intranet) of the VUT. It is expected that the responsible HOD will use the recommendations for development of a Quality Improvement Plan to be implemented by the Department.

The QPU is of the impression that the review report could have been more critical and could have reflected on apparent deficiencies so that quality and growth of the department could be extended. Perhaps the exercise provides the HODs concerned with an opportunity to guide external reviewers as to what is required when such an exercise is executed or to carefully choose panel members for future purposes.

4.Acknowledgements

The Marketing & Sports Management Department presents programmes of a high standard. The lecturers have an excellent awareness of industry and academic needs and they are achieving good results in terms of pass rates, industry acceptance of graduates and have made several achievements within the department. There are areas that require improvement and the Department is aware of these and is endeavouring to meet these challenges, we support these initiatives.

The institution is generally supportive, although the area of computer and internet access and that of creating access and opportunity to do research could be improved. The students are positive and complementary of their learning experience, as were the lecturers positive and excited about their and the department’s future. It is encouraging that the department has embarked on this process of reflection and continuous improvement and we are sure that the Department of Marketing & Sports Management will maintain a high standard and continue to innovate and improve keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field.
