COMMON CORE MATH 3 SYLLABUS

Welcome to Common Core Math 3 at Rolesville High School. I am looking forward to helping you achieve excellence as you continue to explore the mathematics of algebra and geometry introduced in Math 2. Topics we will focus on include statistics, linear programming, polynomials, logarithms, and trigonometry. You are encouraged to come to class every day, study regularly, complete all assignments with diligence, and always ask for help when you need it. If you do these things, I am confident you will be successful in this class. Please know I will do everything I can to help you reach your goals. More information about the topics covered in this class can be found at

MATERIALS:

  • 3 ring binder
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Pencils
  • Calculator (TI-84 or higher)
  • Notecards
  • Graph paper

CLASS POLICIES:

  • ATTENDANCE

To achieve success in mathematics, it is important for you to attend class regularly. Many students have great difficulty trying to learn math work on their own after an absence. Each day’s classwork builds on prior learning. If a student misses just one day, they have difficulty following new assignments. You have ONE WEEK to make up tests for full credit. When you are absent please check the website calendar for all notes and assignments. Failure to make up work (deadlines: 3/4, 3/18, 5/13, 6/4)will result in a grade deduction for that assignment. An absence of one class period will not excuse a student from turning in previously assigned work on the day they return to class.

  • HOMEWORK

Homework will be checked daily for completion. Each homework assignment is worth 20 points, creating a possible 100 points for the weekly homework grade. You will receive credit if ALL problems are written; numbered, attempted, and all necessary work is shown. Ten points are taken off if only half of your work is completed. If you do not have your homework, no points are awarded. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to show me the assignment.

  • QUIZZES

Quizzes are to be expected every week. Quizzes may or may not be announced. If you are absent on the day of a quiz you will need to make it up as soon as possible. As your extra credit, I will drop your lowest quiz grade at the end of each nine weeks period. There is no other extra credit given.

  • WEEKLY OVERVIEWS

You will be given a Weekly Overview sheet every week that will count as a QUIZ GRADE. Weekly Overviews will consist of a SAT word of the week, quote of the week, daily warm ups, discussion questions, and/or math journals. As long as you do what is expected of you, you will receive a quiz grade of 100. This is designed to help you stay on top of your classwork, as well as to reward you for your participation. However, if you fail to turn them in at the end of the week, it will count as a zero for a quiz grade. If you are absent for a class period, it is YOUR responsibility to get the information from a classmate.

  • TESTS

Tests will always be announced. If you are absent the day before a test, you must still take the test with your class. If you are absent the day of a test, you have ONE WEEK to make up the test without deduction. It is YOUR responsibility to schedule a time to make up your test. If you wait until the quarter deadlines (3/4, 3/18, 5/13, 6/3) to make up a test, then you will have a deduction up to 30 points taken off of your test grade. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule.

  • GIVE ME BACK MY POINTS

Every student has the potential to excel in this class. After a unit test, students will be given an in class “GIVE ME BACK MY POINTS” assignment comprised of the most missed questions in their class. This will provide students with the opportunity to earn up to 10 additional percentage points back to their test.

  • If after the additional points, the student is still not passing but did pass the GBMP (6/10 or higher), the student will earn a 60.
  • If after the additional points the student is still not passing and they did not pass the GBMP, there will be parent contact where individual opportunities will be discussed.
  • TUTORING

Enrichment and remediation time are built into the school day to allow for more flexibility. If students need extra help, I will be available on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30. Please make sure that you have reliable means of transportation if you are staying after school.

  • TEACHER WEBSITE/REMIND

There are several ways to keep in contact with me. I will use the class website to post the syllabus and other important documents. This will also be helpful for different resources for students. On this website you will find instructions on how you can subscribe to Remind. The class website is: jmullenrhs.pbworks.com.

  • CLASS EXPECTATIONS

*I expect that you take responsibility for your own learning.*

Asks questions in class if you are having difficulty or uncertain about something. Come in for help as soon as you have a problem instead of waiting until the last minute. Follow Rolesville High School’s Honor Code at all times.

*I expect that you are on time every day.*

When the bell rings, you are in your seat and prepared to start class! Make sure your homework is out on your desk and ready to be reviewed. If a warm up/beginning work is on the board, you should begin working on it immediately. You will not be admitted to class after the tardy bell without a tardy slip.

*I expect that you will be prepared for class every day.*

Maintain all Weekly Overviews, notes, and homework together in a three ring binder. Bring all materials necessary to class EVERY DAY! This includes paper, pencil, calculator, etc. When you are absent, check the website for your assignments. YOU are responsible for EVERY assignment, whether you are present or not. Being prepared for class means going to the bathroom or locker BEFORE class begins. Remember the 20/20 rule: students must remain in class during the first and last 20 minutes of every class period.

*I expect that you will show work on all homework, classwork, quizzes, and tests.*

Writing down only the final answer is not acceptable. Partial credit cannot be received if I cannot see where an answer came from.

*I expect that you will give respect to EACH OTHER and to me.*

Use your manners! Raise your hand before speaking out loud and ask permission before leaving your seat. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE ALLOWED IN CLASS UNLESS INSTRUCTED. This includes charging any device. Disruptions and/or misbehavior will not be tolerated. Participate appropriately. Follow all rules in the student handbook.
