National Dance Institute's Fall 2014 Teaching Artist Training
Two-Week Intensive

NDI Teaching Artist Training is a ten-day immersion in National Dance Institute's renowned teaching techniques. Led by NDI's Master Teaching Artists, the training takes place in residence at a local partner school and at the state-of-the-art NDI Center in Harlem, giving participants hands-on experience working directly with children. Each year, professional artists and educators from around the globe participate in the training and emerge from this transformative experience with an advanced set of teaching tools and a deepened understanding of the power of the arts in education. NDI Teaching Artist Training includes daily teaching assignments, choreography workshops, stimulating group discussions, and presentations from leaders in education.

Shakespeare for Festivall Fall in October!
Are your students studying Shakespeare this fall? As part of Festivall Fall, the Charleston Ballet will be doing a special student performance of ROMEO AND JULIET. A student performance of Shakespeare’s most popular love story, ROMEO AND JULIET will be offered to students in grades 6-12 on Thursday, October 23 at 11:00am in the Civic Center Theatre in Charleston, WV. Student ticket price is $5.00 with teachers/chaperones admitted free at the ratio of 1 teacher/chaperone for every 10 students. Additional chaperones tickets are $5.00. The Festivall Fall committee will offer the American Shakespeare Center from Staunton VA performing HAMLET on Friday, October 24 for the general public at the Scottish Rite Theater. Tickets are $20. A workshop with the company will be held in Charleston with date/time TBD. Arts Education for America’s Students: A Shared Endeavor
The State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE), in partnership with 12 national arts and education organizations, has released Arts Education for America’s Students, a Shared Endeavor, a statement outlining the importance of high quality arts education and those responsible for providing it to students. A Shared Endeavor articulates the purpose and value of arts education in the balanced curriculum of all students, asserts its place as a core academic subject area, and details how sequential arts learning can be supported by rigorous national standards and assessments. The statement, created over a 12-month period by the endorsing organizations, responds to the alarming marginalization of quality arts education in America’s schools in recent years, as funding, staffing, and school time has increasingly focused on tested subject areas. Acknowledging the long history and support for arts education by public and private partners, A Shared Endeavor defines what quality arts education looks like at the local level, encourages partnerships, and calls on organizations and individuals to actively support and promote:
· Policies and resources for arts education.
· Access to arts education for all students.
· Collaboration between school-based arts educators, other subject area teachers, and community-based artists and arts educators.
· Long-term advocacy partnership between all providers of arts education.

THE NEW ARTS STANDARDS HAVE ARRIVED!
Point of Clarification: These are the newly launched, voluntary National Arts Standards. WV arts teachers are encouraged to use these as a valuable resource and a way to better understand what trends and priorities are happening in arts education at the national level. WV may or may not move to adopt these standards in the coming years.

Why are arts standards important? For several reasons:
1. The arts are core subject areas. Education experts and policymakers consistently identify the arts as core subjects - i.e., subjects that all students need to study. Every school has a responsibility to ensure that all of its students master a core curriculum that includes the arts.
2. Arts standards identify what is important for students to know and be able to do in the artistic disciplines of dance, media arts, music, theater and visual arts. Practicing arts educators wrote the standards, with input from researchers and professional artists. This blend of classroom-based wisdom and scientific method enabled writers to craft challenging but developmentally appropriate standards for students at each grade and level.
3. Arts standards identify pathways for students to become creative thinkers, creative makers and creative responders to the world around them. As corporate leaders and policymakers demand a more creative and effective workforce, new arts standards define processes that cultivate our students' problem-solving skills for success in college, career and life.
4. Arts standards emphasize the collaborative nature of artistic production. Teaching the Core Arts Standards develops collaboration and communication - key components of the 21st Century skill set desired by employers and higher education.
5. Arts standards reaffirm the importance of a comprehensive education that extends beyond reading and math. While federal and state education policy supports a broad definition of education that includes the arts, narrow accountability systems too often shrink the scope of children's education to "basics." Arts standards support the comprehensive education that students need for a successful life and career.

Arts Alive 2015!
Start planning now! Arts Alive 2015 will be Friday, April 3rd at the Clay Center in Charleston, WV. Performances and exhibited art work in Arts Alive 2015 may still be selected from professional conferences, festivals and/or exhibits. However, every arts discipline (Dance, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts) will now also have an alternative submission process for 2015. There will no longer be a requirement or pre-requisite that teachers must belong to their professional organization to submit work for consideration. Any arts teacher (Pre-K-12th grade) will be able to submit work for consideration in Arts Alive. Stay tuned for more details as we continue to grow and evolve Arts Alive. Mark your calendars now: Friday, April 3, 2015!

GUIDANCE FOR BUILDING A PROGRAM
Working with exemplary West Virginia arts teachers, the West Virginia Department of Education has prepared a guidance document intended to help guide schools and districts in providing rich arts experiences for their students. You may view the document here:"Building a Comprehensive Arts Program."
