Kingfisher FFA Takes Second in the State FFA Meats Evaluation and Technology Career Development Event

STILLWATER, Okla. — Members of the Kingfisher FFA Chapter won second-place honors in the State FFA Meats Evaluation and Technology Career Development Event during the 2018 Oklahoma FFA Interscholastic Contest at Oklahoma State University April 28.

Team members were Peyton Burns, Thomas Himes, Lane Dobrovolny and Maxwell Hartman. Individually, Burns, Hines and Dobrovolny placed first, fourth and seventh, respectively. This team will represent Oklahoma at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver in January 2019.

The chapter’s agricultural education instructor and FFA advisers are Lori Burns and Ryan Burns.

The Meats Evaluation and Technology CDE requires members to complete a written test, judge quality, yield and grade of beef carcasses, and evaluate and place beef, lamb and pork carcasses. Participants also identify various cuts of meat in relation to species, prime and retail cuts.

The OSU College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the Department of Animal Science hosted the contest. The Cherokee Nation will provide a cash award to the team for expenses related to participation in the national contest in Denver.

FFA is an integral part of the Agricultural Education division in the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education system.
