RE: Nomination for “Winners For Life Award” and “Lifetime Achievement Award”

Dear New Jersey High School Football Coaches:

The John F. Bateman Foundation was established to honor the memory and promotes the ideals, values, and beliefs of Dr. John Bateman, the legendary football coach and educator at Rutgers University from 1960 – 1972. Through the establishment of the “Winners For Life Award” for current coaches and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for retired coaches, the core values of Dr. John Bateman will be honored in deserving past and present New Jersey High School Football Coaches.

The Bateman Awards recognize that a great football coach does more than win football games. He is integral in the development of young men throughout their live. A coach is a mentor, teacher, role model, and part time father. It is the mission of the Dr. John Bateman Education Foundation to recognize and honor these individual coaches, past and present, and draw attention to their value to young men and our society as a whole. The impact of a football coach can be seen by what his players have not only accomplished on the playing field but what the accomplish as an adult, father, husband, and employee. A coaches impact can been felt 20,30, even sometimes 40 years after the last time a helmet was worn or the cleats laced up. This is the type of impact Dr. Bateman had on his players and the type of coach that the Bateman Award is bestowed upon.

Dr. Bateman is a great example of the kind of coaches we want to honor. To him, footballwas a way of enhancing a young man’s education, while strengthening his character and capacity to contribute to the community. When Dr. Bateman passed away in 1998, his former players decided that the best way to continue his legacy was to honor coaches who bring his principles to life. Since Rutgers is where John had his greatest success, the Bateman Education Foundation chose to highlight coaches in New Jersey. Since high school is where the real leverage in reaching young men is, the Bateman Education Foundation chose to single out high school coaches.

New Jersey is fortunate to have many coaches who are doing exemplary work with their players, and the Bateman Education Foundation would like to recognize those outstanding individuals who have continued to instill in their athletes the same core beliefs that Dr. Bateman held.

In addition to awarding the winner a donation to help continue his good work, we will be honoring him at a halftime ceremony at a Rutgers home game next fall. A “Winner for Life” honoree ‘s school will be awarded a $3,000 donation in name of the coach, while a “Lifetime Achievement Award” honoree will receive a $1,000 donation in his name to a school of his choice.

The criteria for selection are attached. Please be cognizant of whether the nominee is a current coach, who would be awarded the “Winners for Life Award” or a retired coach, who would be nominated for the “Lifetime Achievement Award.”
