Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Campus Dining, the Sanitation Supervising Technicianoversees the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities in a manner that ensures a safe and sanitary environment. In addition, the candidate will supervise the sanitation staff as well as maintain existing programs and develop new programs that conform to health code, other applicable regulations and departmental and Occidental College standards.

Essential Functions

  1. Creates, reviews, updates, and monitors compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) for effective and efficient cleaning, maintenance sanitation, storage and inventory of equipment throughout all dining and catering facilities. Creates and maintains programs and policies that prevent losses, breakage and shortages of department equipment.
  1. Supervises department sanitation staff consisting of hourly unionized and casual staff. Administers the training, development, evaluation and discipline of these employees. Follows human resources procedures in accordance with government regulations, department and College policies and the bargaining unit contract. Reviews and revises job descriptions periodically. In consultation with immediate supervisor, recommends hiring and termination decisions.
  1. Manages shift schedules including work station assignments/rotations, vacations, breaks, overtime assignments, back-ups for absent employees and shift rotations.
  1. While covering evening shift, coordinates sanitation team shift startup, changeovers and shutdown. Continuously monitors sanitation of the facility. Assists, as needed, with front of house (FOH) tasks and procedures including management coverage, floor presence, cashiering and closing.
  1. Ensures staff, guest, food, equipment and facility safety at all time. Performs all duties in a safe manner. Trains all employees in personal protection equipment and use to ensure that employees are following all established safety policies/procedures. Uses proper safety signs and equipment.
  1. Coordinates supplies of cleaning chemicals, replacement parts and cleaning equipment for the Sanitation department. Performs weekly inventory of chemicals and parts and monitors proper usage.
  1. Creates, reviews, updates an extensive, detailed Master Sanitation Schedule with daily, weekly and periodic tasks. Regularly reviews and updates schedule to reflect changes in equipment design, new equipment, or changes in cleaning procedures. Establishes and oversees adherence to equipment and facility maintenance schedules and requests repair services as appropriate. Maintains necessary records.
  1. Oversees, reviews and trains staff on College’s composting and recycling programs.
  1. Serves as sanitation liaison with the student-run Green Bean Coffee House. Meets with Green Bean staff weekly to review cleanliness and compliance of the operation. Provide sanitation training to Green Bean supervisors.
  1. Communicates effectively in writing and in person at all levels of the institution, including staff, peer supervisors, department heads, students and visitors. Provides customer service. Assists customers with questions, problems and requests. Informs management of problems.
  1. Represents the department internally at Safety Committee meetings and other ad-hoc meetings as needed.
  1. Contributes to a total team management effort within the department, including many large special events, major projects and peak workload periods. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Job Qualifications

  • Must be fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish.
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals is required.
  • Must be able to write routine reports and procedural documents.
  • Must be able to work effectively with office technology including daily use of e-mail, Google applications and Microsoft Word and Excel. Detailed knowledge of sanitation procedures, cleaning equipment and procedures required.
  • Must be able to work with hoses under pressure and work in a cold or hot and wet environment for long periods of time.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move items up to 50 lbs. (more with assistance).
  • Must be able to tolerate frequent standing, bending and lifting. Must achieve ServSafe Manager Certification within 6 months of employment, and must continually maintain this certification. Must possess a valid California driver’s license and obtain and maintain College authorized driver status.
